Brakes on the Max suck....whats up?

the brakes on my 108k miles '00 max suck.....no vibration but they feel mushy and soft, i hate it.
is this just an overal max problem that calls out for brembro brakes or somethin' wrong with my ride??

Brake working okay. Fluid has been flushed recently? Air in the lines? Water absorption?

Then again, the maxima is largest car that Nissan offers with the crappy single piston caliper and dinky rotor size. There's a good reason Nissan put the larger rotors on the 04' Max.

Totally agree..Had 95 Maxima squealed like a pig no matter what I did..and I did it all..now I am getting brake judder with 30k miles on my 2002 and it still has 75% brake life..called Nissan and they said recall only applies to 2000 unless they get more complaints..I have had it with the Maxima...this will be my last one unfortunately..love the car but don't want to hear and feel my brakes all the time..

I drive a 2000 with 67k miles. My brake system sucks !

what does that recall pertain to? Do i need to have warranty or is this all 2000 maxima's?

do i have the option of making nissan fix these crappola brakes.

Only good 3 years or 36000 miles on the 2000...2002 or any other model is out of luck all together according to Nissan..

it depends on how mushy and soft. if you nearly need to floor it to get it to stop then i would recommend bleeding the system. in fact i'd recommend it anyway. you can do it yourself but its easier to just get a flush at any tire/repair shop for like 50 bux.

at this point, I think '00 owners are SOL as far as "free" etching or new rotors, 3yr/36000 warranty.

The 5 gens have good brakes, stock to stock vs other makes, BUT the warpping rotors, accompanied with the judder, are disconcerting...

Try this out:
http://www.mattblehm.com/300ZX_brakes.html

300zx calipers, 2K4 rotors, SS brake lines, and the hardware for caliper relocation.... and all for about $850.

actually i dunno if upgrading your brake system will help, some people report reduced pedal feel from extra pistons on a stock master cylinder. I think the best solution is to bleed your brake fluid, and some $100 stainless steel brake lines. That alone will improve pedal feel like you wouldn't believe. Also, new pads may help but are not necessary unless yours are worn.

Chinkzilla is right 100 % ! SS brake lines will improve the feel of your brakes big time. Brake lines expand when you aply force to your brakes. By replacing them with SS lines, that no longer happens. Spending 800 bucks to upgrade to 2k4 rotors is insane, when for a few more bucks , there are TRUE Big Brake kits available to you. I just upgraded all 4 rotors, and have new Nissan pads, and will be adding SS lines, till I can get my AP Racing BBK.

I'm loving my 13" Wilwood 4piston calipers, 13" rotors and SS lines

I don't honestly see the point

So for $800-ish you get big rotors and better calipers. For $300-ish you get bigger rotors but with stock calipers/pads. And replacement rotors for this kit are available from Nissan for around ~$170 shipped from DAVEB. What's so bad about using another car's "OEM"? If it works, it works. (we've yet to prove that it works, but that's just a matter of time)

I agree aswell. How is the Wilwood any better? They both have 4 piston calipers and bigger rotors and doesn't that kit cost something like $1500. That's almost double the cost of the 300ZX 4 piston calipers and the bigger 2K2 rotors with SS brakes lines. I don't know too much about big brake systems, but the "OEM" kit looks good to me.

Because people like to spend bling to say they have XXX part on a car I guess.

I put this kit on my car and let me dispell a few myths right here and now.

FACT:
1) After the second bleeding the pedal is FIRMER. Not mushier...FIRMER than stock
2) I have some test numbers stock, averaging around 130 ft 60 - 0. This weekend I went to the same place and AVERAGED about 113 ft. Best was a 108. And unlike with stock...I ran it 10 times and got not fade. Right now my weak link is my OEM soft suspension.
3) Yes its OEM from another car, but its performing WAY better than MY OEM equipment.

To address Kiosk's issue, which is dealing with pedal "mushiness", will probably be resolved by replacing the rubber lines with SS lines. When you do this, I would also do a complete purge of the brake fluid and put in new. You should feel much better modulation in the pedal.

I like my "ghetto" bbk kit. Less than $800 too. heh

Here is an interesting discussion regarding my 300z caliper/13" Cobra rotor set up vs / AP Racing brake set up.
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=304431

It's further down the page but it's there.

The porbable quick fix is to do a complete brake system flush/bleed and go from there. If you want to spend some $$$ on high speed brakes.. mo power to ya. Good luck.
