New owner of 2k Maxima - Please Help!

Hi everyone. I just purchased my first Maxima Last Week. It is a 2000 with A/T. I purchased it from a young couple for $5,500. The car had alittle over 100k miles. It is in mint Cond. inside and out. The problem was in the engine. The car turned on like a Match, and idled so smooth, I couldn't even tell the car was on.

The Problem was when I drove it, the car would not spin over 3,500 RPM's, and had no power. I went ahead and purchased the car anyways. After spending all last week reading over 30 pages of past posts on this forum, I went ahead and Gutted my Main Cat, Cleaned the Filthy Throttle Body, Droped in a K&N in the factory Air Box, had the Fuel Injectors de-carbonized, and Installed new NGK plugs. I had the engine codes read at the local AutoZone, thinking it myght be an ignition Failure, but only a 2nd Gear Ratio Problem showed up, which makes sense, only because it takes a while to shift from 1st to 2nd. I sometimes have to let off the gas pedal in order for it to shift.

Anyway, to make a long story short, after all the work I did to the car this weekend, It is a whole new animal. It revs freely to 5,800 when driving and 6,500 in park or neutral. It never did that before. It can pick up from 55 to 90 in a flash on the Expressway.

My question now is this, what is the top speed of the 3.0L Automatic Maxima. The reason I ask, is because the highest I have been able to take this car is 102-105 MPH. It seems low.

Is there anyother thing that I can do to the car in order to really open the engine up? I am a pretty good mechanic with domestic cars. I have pushed my 1993 Mustang 5.0 to mid 10's with a 125 shot of N2O. But I am still a rookie with Imports. I have read mostly all the Stickys, but I can't seem to find the top speed of these cars.

Also, I went to my local Stealership to purchase a Fuel Filter that I wanted to install my self, but they wouldn't sell it to me. They said I needed the whole fuel pump assembly that was close to $350-$400. Does Anyone have the part number of the Fuel Filter by itself? Could this be the cause of my motor only reaching 102MPH?

You guys rock. I had no Idea that there were Maxima Enthusiasts out there . I have quickly become one, since playing around with my car this weekend.

If anyone wants to send me a email directly, my new email address is: BLACK2000MAXIMA@YAHOO.COM

Welcome and congrats on the new purchase! For fuel filter info, go here: http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=276627. Scroll about 1/2 way.

To "open the engine up", you could consider a CAI/WAI, Y-pipe, exhaust, headers, B-pipe. Of course, with the power, comes noise.

Ive taken my max to 130 but had to back down cause i saw headlights approaching. But the car was still pulling with no problems. I think that the SE trim doesnt have a govenor, so you shuld be able to top out your speedomiter.

Sounds like it might be your MAF. You can get a new sensor for under or around $100. My car had no power over 4000 rpm and hesitated at low rpms when cold. With new MAF, power is grand!

you probably need to reset the ECU. it "learns" the drivers driving style and only performs as well as you want/need it to. the previous owners probably babied it to much
to reset it, disconect the battery overnight. then in the morning, drive it like you stole it. it will learn that and you will be amazed at the diffirence

I've hit 135+ but ran out of road. You should be able to hit 120 wihtout breaking a sweat on you car.

I tried to check my top speed again yesturday afternoon. There is a 15 mile straight shot Farm Road were I live. I was onlyu able to get it up to 105. And that is because it took a while to pick up from 95-105. I am going to try resetting the ECU. Would the fact that Second Gear has a problem have anything to do with my top speed being so low? Do you guys think that a dirty fuel filter may have something to do with it? Maybe I am running out of fuel on the top end? Lastly, were can a get that MAF for around $100??

Thanks.

You could get a cheap MAF from Dave in Texas: Here is DaveB's new phone number: 1-888-254-6060

Give him a call if you need any OEM nissan parts. He is a great parts guy and gives unbeatable prices! Many ORG members order parts from Dave.
