50K Miles..Time for a Tune Up?

I just hit 50K on my 01 Max, and I need an oil change, my mechanic says I should get a tune up as well. I believe him because he has been my families mechanic for years, and has been the only one to touch my Max, but the car feels and drives fine. When did some of you guy/girls get tune ups, and how much was it?

I dont think the tune up is worth it; what is he going to do? New air filter, new spark plugs. You can do that yourself, he would probably try to use cheaper plugs than what the car comes with. If it runs fine dont fix it!!

I dont know what kind of cars your mechanic typically works on but you shouldnt have to do a "tune up" till you hit 100K. Of course you should keep your oil changed and your air filter clean, but other than that you shouldnt have to worry about other maintenance for a while.

sure, you could leave the plugs in there for 100k, maybe even longer. if you cannot afford to maintain a car then you should have spent less on the car initially. i replaced my plugs at 30k and they already had a decent amount of wear. nissan says the fuel filter is good for the lifetime of the car. what makes its fuel filter different than every other one that gets replaced every 30-40k miles. if you want the car to run in top condition especially with gas prices where they are then i would look at having plugs changed (i would go with platnium in your case), air filter checked, tranny either flushed or drain and refill, flush of coolant system, check the condition of the brake fluid along with the oil change. i perform most all of the maintenance on my vehicle so i could not give you an accurate figure.

I tend to .....

I tend to think kind of old school 100.000 miles seems crazy. I recently hit 46000 miles and did my own tuneup . Peace of mind I guess. I changed my Spark Plugs with OEM platinum plugs from Courtesy Nissan. The Back three a real pain in the rear with a Stillen FSTB installed. I recommend removeing one side of the FSTB in order to change the rear plugs. As well as haveing a magnetic rod and two extensions for your ratchet those back three plugs are extremely deep. It was also nice to see those grey dots on the coils "THANK GOD". I also changed the PCV valve fairly easy. And cleaned the throttle body. Flushed the coolant. Did a tranny flush as well and went amsoil synthetic. Changed the oil Mobil 1 syn and changed the oil drain bolt and washer also from Courtesy Nissan. Cleaned my Stillen intakes K&N filter and reoiled it. Maybe it is mind over matter I just feel better having done this. It is also nice to do the work yourself very rewarding. I will eventually go to Nissan to have them change my serpentine belt. Wont even try that my self. I also used my mothers portable steam cleaner she bought from QVC to clean the engine compartment and detailed the hoses with a zaino product. All is now well in my own little head having done this. I guess its kind of like when your car is real dirty in & out after you have cleaned it and detailed the interior it always feels like it runs better. LOL! Were all guilty of this . The best horse power gain you can get is cleaning your car.......LOL P.S also use BG44k injector cleaner. Follow there directions to the tee as far as how to drive the car when you put the cleaner in.
