Noisy UDP/belts?

I'm having a "flutter" noise while the car is under torque (i.e. moving from a stop, bogging in 2nd), and it appears to be coming from the UDP. When I bought this, UR only had the 3.0 version listed, and since then they've listed a 3.5 version. Is the only difference between the two the extra plate? If so, does it hurt to have it on the 3.5? Could this be my noise?

Also, when I had my UR UDP installed, the mechanic only replaced 1 belt (AC I believe). Is this normal? What are the two recommended belts?

Please help!

i have the same flutter but on my 3.0 with the same unorthodox. blubyu2k2 has the noise on his 2k2 but he has the 3.5 application. i have used a different variety of belts only for it to cure for a short while. for some reason it gets worse when its humid outside. as far as the belt replacement goes, i purchased a new belt for water pump side but i used the same as stock as it fit fine but had to use a longer belt due to the smaller crank pulley. the only difference in the 3.0 pulley and the 3.5 one is the ring on the backside.

Augh! Are they lemons?

It annoys me so much I'm willing to go back to stock... There must be some root cause to this.

i have considered the bearings being shot in the pulley but when a new belt was put on, the noise was gone for a few months. seems like when it gets some heat in the belt that it quiets down. i have considered going to a stock size lightened pulley but have not seen any trusted applications.

Well... I'm going to remove the timing plate this weekend, and go from there. The next step will be different belts, lastly go back to stock... This noise leaves me concerned that the balance may be off. Then the matter of the noise doesn't mean anything, as the engine will be f*cked.

i would just check the deflection on the belt and also look at the tensioner pulley to check for grease on the backside indicating a bad tensioner.

I had the UR (02-03 Max flavor) pulley installed on my 02 Max (auto) about a month ago. I purchased new belts (GATES K060408 & K040300) and a new crank seal. No issues so far after 2300 miles.

How would I adjust the deflection?

Before I get into this project, I want to make sure we're event talking about the same symptoms. Everything sounds fine at idle, and while cruising. The noise is only audible when the engine is being torqued. Is this accurate?

ive got the description out of my haynes manual but i am not sure if i could describe it so its understandable. while at napa or whatever parts store you visit, i would pick up a haynes manual for 14 bucks and look at the description in chapter 1. by the way, i do have my noise at idle and when i push partial throttle. i could not tell you if its louder because of the intake and headers that i hear over the belts or udp.

What's your offer? I removed the timing plate and the noise persists. Next step on Sunday is to swap the belts. If the noise is there, going stock. So you'd get all the belts & the UDP.

Well, I removed the UDP and the noise is gone. What's your offer for the UDP w/ 1 belt?

Yes it will fit the 2k, providing you keep the timing plate on, which it is now.

Install isn't bad. Loosening the bolts for the 1st time might be a b1tch. Look in the how-to section, there are some good install guides there. The only absolutely required tools that may not be in everyones tool box are a breaker bar, and 140lb torque wrench. Other than that, your normal toolbox tools will work.

i replaced mine with a new one even though the motor only had 20k when it went on. that should not have anything do with noise, just potential leaking issues.

I spoke with Unorthodox in great lenghts to determine what could have been making the noise. They were baffled, so I sent them the pully & belt for analysis. I expect to hear something shortly, which I'll share with you all.

New UDP, new belts = noise gone.

Unorthodox stood by their product, even though they couldn't determine what the cause of the noise was.

Can you describe this "flutter" noise any better? Ever since I installed my udp, I get a whining noise. It's kind of a "whir whir whir" sound that is somewhat high pitched. I hear it anytime I step on the gas and especially when accelerating hard. Is this similiar to what you had?

Mine sounded more like a mild exhaust leak. Several mechanics were convinced it had to be a bolt backing out of the exhaust manifold, because it would only happen when the engine was being torqued.
