Problem: Powerloss and whine when the A/C is on...

.. Recently, i've started the use the A/C more since it gets real hot out now.. so I was driving around and noticed the air conditioner is really weak. I was on full blast and it was not very effective, it cools but not so well. So I thought i just need to recharge it.
Later, I noticed that the car feels really sluggish, I know that cars don't perform as good with the A/C on but it was REALLY bad..

then, I noticed that when i get to 3k RPMs and above, there is a noticeable whine coming from somewhere... sounds like a ghetto blow off valve..

so what can this be?

My guess is the A/C compressor belt? but what's happening, is it slipping or can it be too tight? i checked it and it seemed alright. A bit hard though...

how do i go about in fixing this problem?

thanks

Your compressor might be binding or locked up, creating drag, and causing your belt to slip (hence the noise, and power loss)

NYC

Before you spend a dime on A/C charging or diagnosis, be sure you replace your cabin air filter (if you have one).

A clogged cabin filter will reduce airflow and cause whinning noises from the interior fan. Had a similar problem with my previous car...replaced the filter that helped.

There are on-line tips in the forum on how to replace it.

Thanks

Vic

I think the whine is normal. I have the same thing and it does it when the defroster is on as well...Its funny b/c it does sound like a cheap blow off valve. DOesnt bother me too much though

i had two cars now, and the ive noticed when the AC is on, the car is slower at acceleration...... i think its normal since AC drains a lot of gas. I might be wrong. someone can ad to this.

On the whining part.... my AC whines.... really low whine, i guess thats the noise of the Ac compressor.... guess its normal....
