If you call Dave B or a local Nissan parts counter, they will have a filter and a gasket p/n for you... Local dealers wanted something like $50-60 for both... Dave B saves you a few $$...

Just to confirm, the fuel filter is located under the back seats?

Yes, pull the rear bottom seat out. Check pages 1 and 2 for explicit instructions.

Gotta bring this back.

I just finished this job in about 30 min and that was taking my time. Extremely easy to do and the end result is amazing. The car is much more responsive and there isn't that dead spot before she kicks in anymore. I recommend this maintenance regardless of what the stealership says.

Here is a pic after 90,000 miles. I should have listened when I said I was going to do it after 30,000. By the way I've got a lot of pics of the job if anyone is interested.

Very nice pics of the old filter. You may want to post a writeup with some pics since the 2k2-2k3 fuel filters are different then the 2k-2k1's

Where's the best place to buy? In terms of price and good service.

Thanks!

My gas needle is stuck at full. I was wondering if I change the entire unit, if it fixes the problem. That way I have a new filter at the same time.

Mine was stuck at empty after I replaced the fuel filter. Somehow I had it jammed when I had replaced it. Your mechanism may be jammed. Its up to you if you want to take it apart and see if that solves it before buying the part.

I have a question regarding fuel filters on the 5th generation Maximas. I recently test drove an SE today and the dealer told me that the fuel filter and the oil needed to be changed because it hesitates in the higher gears. I would call it bogging. Just a bit. I took it for a spin (first time ever driving a Maxima) and the first gear was definitely speedy I thought. It seems like the performance was what I was expecting in gears 1-2, but then I got it up to 80 mph and it just didn't quite have that omph that I was looking for in a Maxima. The dealer says the mechanics (keep in mind this is a used car dealer, not an offical Nissan one) thought it just needed a fuel filter and oil change and it would be good to go.

I wanted to take it home that day, but they refused to let me until they fixed it (a good thing, now that I think back on it). How likely is it that the fuel filter would make a dip in performance in the higher gears? I asked some friends who are car savvy and they said it sounds like it's the fuel filter, but it could be a host of other things like maybe wires, sparkplugs, etc..

I haven't signed any binding agreements. If I go back on Monday to test drive it again to see if they fixed it and don't notice a change, I'm walking away from this sale.

What advice do the Maxima pros have for me?

Ohh, and this is a 2000 SE fully loaded with 93,000 miles on it. The dealer mentioned that the fuel filter probably has never been changed on it (I have no reason to think he's lying about it, but of course dealers always lie). I refuse to sign anything before they fix the car. Any advice?

remember, your fuel filter is in your tank. I've gone to some places for an oil change (I watch these people like a hawk) and have told me my car doesn't have a fuel filter since it isn't in the standard place.

Hesitation could be a lot of things, coils, maf, ecu needing update, knock sensor, etc... Do some reading around here. Is it an auto or manual?

It's an auto.

All I know right now is that the dealer says that it needs a new fuel filter and oil change before I bring it home and officially buy it.

What are some things I could do when test driving to see if it's fixed? Like I said, the first few gears were speedy, but it just didn't have the same type of power I expected at higher speeds.

I guess I'll show up Monday and test drive it again and try to see if anything feels differently than it did today.

I just don't want these dealers to put some fuel injection in or something to make it okay for a few days only for it to get messed up later. I'm just trying to be cautious. Thanks!

I would take it to Auto Zone and see if they produce any codes. If some do show you'll know what's up. As far as the filter change it just one of many possibilities.

I wonder if this used car dealership know where the fuel filter even is!!

The dealer didn't know where the fuel filter was! He was clueless, but he said his mechanics think that is what the problem is. We'll see. It does come with a powertrain warranty for 3 months after I buy it. I think if it seems to be performing okay when I test drive it again, I'll bring it to a reliable shop that I know and have them do a nice thorough check on the whole car to see if anything is wrong. A simple code test at a an Autozone seems like a good idea too.

You know what I think it probably is...and this is just a guess...but I bet it's the ignition coils. Man, there is so much out there on 2000 SE's with around 90,000 miles with this problem. There's a petition going around calling for Nissan to do a recall on these coils, but instead it just seems like they made new non-defective ones with new part #'s. The thing is, when you replace one faulty one, you pretty much should replace all 6 of them and they're around 70 bucks each on top of labor. I'm not touching this Maxima for sale with a 10 ft. pole unless the dealers look into this. Crazy.

check the vi, if its a top end thing then most likely the car is choking and not getting enough air up there.

VI = Variable Intake, it is basically a plastic divider that opens and closes at a certain RPM allowing for better performance top end. it is in your upper intake manifold and at 5100 RPM it closes creating a shorter path for the air to enter the motor. it is known to be broken on the 2k-2k1 motors due to a brass cup that becomes dettached from the plastic base it is on. fixing it costs about 5 dollars and about a days time, 2 hours of work, 12 hours of drying time. there is a write up on how to check for it and fix it in the 5th gen section of the how-to's.

stop worrying so much about it, the only filter the car has is in tank and nothing else. most likely it needs a tune up and the VI fix. stop sweating the problem so much.

Sorry ... but how do you get the back seat off? Do you need to remove the whole back seat or just the bottom? Thanks!

Just the bottom portion, you pull the two rings at the bottom of the seat and it comes out...

bringing this back from the dead,..

I just replaced my fuel filter this morning, and I used this thread for guidance and mostly housecors site.
seen here--> http://shiftice.com/fuel_filter.html

In Terms of Install- Extremly easy install.. I was worried that i was getting in over my head,..but it took me exactly about an hour including cleanup and vacuuming..

In Terms of Impressions-
I can 100% tell something is different,.. she idles so quietly and smooth at~625ish,..not sure if thats where its supposed to be,.. the tach could be off but it sure is smooth...not only that but i think i might have free'd up a few lost ponies.. acceleration seems much smoother ..and it pulls hard to redline,..

I also record every tank of gas and clock my mpg tank to tank.. so we'll see if I get any changes,..

and...i took a hacksaw and tore open my old filter.. its a cheap paper element and it was very dark/dirty,..no large particles though which is good...

so my overall opinion,..at this point in time.. every 5g should have a decent amount of miles and if you havnt done this already you need to!..well worth the peace of mind for ~25 bucks and an hour of your time..

if anyone needs help feel free to PM

For the life of me, I cannot drop the fuel filter from the top half of the assembly. Any hints? On a 2002 SE.

Edit: Just had to pull the fuel filter out of the top half of the fuel pump assembly, took another pair of hands to help hold everything still. Then carefully pull to separate.

Is there anywhere I can get this in person other than a dealership, or is my only option ordering it?

You can try the parts department at the dealer but be ready for an argument, or use courtseyparts.com to get the part number and just ask to purchase that.

Changed my filter a couple weeks ago. I couldn't tell a difference in anything, idle, response, power, or fuel economy. But, that may only mean my filter was not impairing the vehicle at this point....for others it very well may have.

In my experience in my 5.5 Max.....I did not remove the fuel temp/gauge section. I found when trying to remove it, it seemed like it wanted to break. In looking at it, the thing was not even in the way of dissassembly in order to access the fuel filter, so I left it alone. I think I wasted 10 minutes or more messing with it when I didn't have to. The only other difference I would site with the write up, is that the 5.5 has only one fuel hose which needs to be disconnected before pulling out the pump assembly. Otherwise, the write-up matches between models.

I changed my fuel filter a year or two back and I can tell you that this is worth your time. I noticed an immediate increase in responsiveness all across the rev range. I also got (and am still getting) around a 1 mpg improvement on fuel economy. This is in thousands of miles of driving both before and after the filter change. Nissan or any other manufacturer is full of crap saying these are "lifetime" filters. The sole purpose of any filter is to do just that. Either there is a need for a filter in a given application or there's not. If this fuel filter never needed replacement, why is there a need for a filter at all?

I agree that this is well worth every dollar spent. 2002 here with 130 thousand on it. Took no time to do and very responsive and smooth going up in rpms.

I just went to the Nissan dealer closest to me and I got the Filter for $15 and the O-Ring for $10. I'm going to install it tonight .

Do it!

I'll clarify about my statement, even though it may not have proven "noticeable" to me does not mean it was a waste. I know it should have been done and know if nothing else I saved myself some trouble down the road! Just TOO EASY a job to ignore what should be part of regular maintenance....despite what Nissan states!
