I pushed my maxima to it's limits... almost got into an accident.

Ever since I first bought the car, I have gone very easy on it. Hardly ever brought it above 3k rmps, always took corners with caution, and never took any chances.

One day I was with my buddy, and we were listening to my newly installed system, and he asks have I tested the handling on my car yet. I said, "Well sort of, but I have not really pushed it very hard". (I.E. going on an onramp from a hwy and what not) So my friend told me to take the street with a nice easy turn to see how the car does. (We often take the cars on this bend to test out handling with new cars)

So we are approaching the bend, the music is blaring, and there are no cars in sight. I adjusted my posture and braced my legs for anticipation of the upcoming curve. I am doing about 40mph as I enter the inside of the curve. I sense the car pushing it's self to the limits, and then I hear squealing. Never a good sign. I backed off the gas... and then I a large bump in the road. It was all over from that point.

Hitting the bump made my car bounce up, and since I was already sliding, it made the back end come out on me. Now I was scared. Having learnt from previous situations just like this one, I tried my best to control the car with out over correcting. I fishtailed... and came extremely close to a brick wall. As soon as my car was pointed in the other direction, I straightened out the wheel, and slammed on the brakes. My car skidded to a complete stop landing sideways in the road.

I looked at my friend, and said "I guess it does not handle to well." we both laughed, and then it hit how much worse the situation could have been. I realized that sure it is fun to drive fast, but not if the car is not properly equipped to do so. I was lucky, and God must have been looking over me that day. So many "What it’s" ran through my mind on the drive home. I was glad I had the adequate enough driving skills to regain control, or I do not know what type of mess I would be in.

I am now back to my normal driving since that day. I will no longer put myself, my car, or anyone else's life on the line. Besides, I get better gas mileage.

I just figured I would share my story with all of you, partly to let you know of my first mistake in my new car, and partly to hopefully open some eyes out there to let you know that we drive nice cars, let’s keep them that way, and we are not invincible. Ok, that’s all. Damn, I wrote a lot. Sorry.

Man, glad it didn't get too ugly. An empty parking lot without too many lightpoles is a far better choice...

Do you have a RSB?

Good story and good experience. I never abuse my cars and I treat them as if I am borrowing my best friend's car for a drive. You certainly don't want to wreck your friend's ride, while injuring others and yourself in the process.

glad you are ok but -

next mod - common sense

"I was glad I had the adaquite enough driving skills to regain control"

true driving skills is knowing your cars limits.
and everyone knows, "excelerate at the apex of the turn"

SEmy2K2go --- Yes, I plan to once I decide on what rims I would like for my car... and when I find some money to pay for them...

housecor --- No, I do not have a RSB. I had one on my old Max, and that was another time in which My back end sliped out on me. unfortunetly, I was unable to control that spin. It was not pretty. Having a RSB is nice, but the risk of having the back end slip out increases.

kenny --- thank you, and very true.

soonerfan --- I was under control for the most part of the curve untill I hit the bump. Everything would have been fine if I did not hit the bump. I backed off the gas when I felt the car giving out a bit. So I knew that was the limit... but then immediately after i hit the bump.

Don't get 19's or else you'll have thinner tires than what you probably have now! =P people don't understand, big isn't always good. Unless for show then it's ok.

Along those lines....'

Was just watching the news here in the Philly area, a street race turned deadly when one of the cars that was racing (looked like a WRX) ran into a family in a SUV. Father, Mom and son were in the SUV and their Son died. The driver of the WRX survived.

Keep that in mind next time you think someone is "messing" with you on the road.

Whenever I'm driving my project car, I get revved at a lot, most of the time it's someone in a WRX. Even I bite sometimes but after hearing about this race, I promised myself to stay out of it.

there is nothing wrong with having a lil fun when the streets are empty. but taking a turn in an unmodded max is not pretty. riding with a system def. helps me drive nice and slow.

Since the Max is front wheel drive, I think you could have pulled the back into line again by giving it some gas . . . To make it handle the bumps in turns better, you need to upgrade your struts. Glad you weren't hurt and didn't damage the car.

When was the last time you saw Micheal Waltrip, Juan Pablo Montoya, Sam Hornish, Hans Stuck or anyone else like that drive with loud music or any other distraction that prevents them from hearing what the tires are doing before they start sliding?

Because of our rear (beam) suspension, our cars do not handle turns with bumps with very well. If there were no bumps in the road would probably would have handled the curve just fine. The dangerous thing is that you never know when a bump is lurking around the bend.

Off Topic question:

Blkmax95c, I noticed from your sig that you have sold many Maximas with mods. Did you sell them with the mods on? Private sales or trade in? Will a dealer accept a car as a trade with mods?

Just wondering as I begin to modify my I30 what will happen when its time to sell it.

Most mods will hurt the resale, especially at the dealer. I hope to drive this car until it is completely worthless, so I dont worry about resale

Anyway, our stock suspension does not handel curves with bumps well at all. With my Eibachs and illuminas the car is MUCH more controled. I really got rid of that nasty hop. As a rule I always go into a turn with a lot of caution. When I see that the coast is clear, which just so happens to be about at the apex, then I can feel free to hammer it. I am usually pretty conservative when I drive... Although I tend to be traveling more quickly than others on the roads

Thank you all for the kind words. But to answer some questions:

Galo -- I never saw any of those people drive with music on, for I do not know those poeple in which you speak of! yes, it was a mistake, and I admit that. next time I will be more careful, if i decide that there is a next time.

sascuderi -- It depends... some I sold with mods on, and some with mods off. It was really up to how I felt the buyer would like it to be. If I see that it is a mid 30 man, obviously I took the mods off. (98 maxima) but if it was another person my age, then I asked questions to see if the person is into mods or not. some poeple see the mods as a sign of abuse... in which most cases it is true. so it is always better to take them off. But in the case with my 95 maxima, i had too much into the car... two tone leather, all performace mods except UDP, and a stillen front lip that was fused to the body. I just left it all on and sold it. When I went to the dealer to pick out the car that i have now, the salesman did not like the fact that I had an intake, and other mods. they lowballed me. Hope this helps.

and as for everything else, my next mod will be with out a doubt suspension. It make a huge diffrence, and I miss it from my 98 max. i just have to find the right products at the right price.

Pierce... your alive? haven't seen you post much lately...

yeah, it could have been much worse, came to close to that wall for comfort. If i would have crashed it, I would be hard pressed to get to work everyday, which means i would have no money/lose job, and then my insurance would go up since I would use the full coverage to pay to get it fixed. atleast the $669 I pay every month for the insurance would actually go toward something, but still.

Unfortunately it is true. $669 for insurance, and $290 a month for my car loan. The loan is really good, but the insurance is killing me. But once I turn 21, the rate drop quite a bit... too bad I have to wait until November. I wish my parents would help me out, but they never do, so I don't expect them to. Oh well, it can only get better as time goes on!

Yeah, I know it... I was almost in one today! Some lady evidently thought her light was green, and decided to floor it... she was half way through the 4 way intersection when I saw her... slamed on the brakes so hard and quicky downshifted to 2nd. My car just slid for a good 8 feet since the ground was wet. finally stopped in the middle of the intersection with the front of her car 2 feet away from me. Once again, scared as heck. The lady was on her cell phone, and seemed to be in shock.

anyway, back on topic, I was in warwick, next to the old amusement park Rocky point.

Galo -- yes, it does... but I squeeze by. i'll save a bunch of money soon though.

Lawrenceismynam That was uncalled for... My "idiot" Friend has been my best friend for many years, and I am a godfather to his youngest child. It was no more his fault then it was mine, so I do not appreciate your words. Calling my friend an idiot is the same as saying to me. so please take your negitive comments elsewhere. thanks.
