Drop resistor mod?

well after seeing hte improvement in 1/4 mile time by bigdo26 i decided i was going to try this to see if i felt a diff

i had my engine running and went to unplug the plug and as soon as i unplugged it there was a rattling sound coming from my transmission

then i plugged it back in and it went away

is this normal??
also is the drop resistor mod bad for the auto trans??

If you want something good, get the VB mod....I know u don't want to spend the money...but better that than the $tealer voiding the warranty......

I did it to my max. It feels like to trans about to fall out of the car when you don't floor it. So I just use it when i am racing. The rpms don't drop down as far when the car is shifting.

It's funny that those of us who have been racing/driving our cars hard for a VERY long time have never had any problems at all from the drop resistor mod. I wouldn't reccommend unplugging the sensor while the car is running, though...

Well I have used the DR Mod on all 3 of my Maxima's and have raced all of them with at least a 150 shot of nitrous and no problems.

I just won't race without it. However although its great for N/A and up to a 75 HP shot of spray its just not fast enough for much higher HP. Of course the VB mod isn't going to be either, full line pressure is full line pressure and the VB mod won't shift any faster than the DR mod.

The stock shift speed is fine for me at part throttle, I am only concerned with WOT shifts so the VB mod is of no interest to me.

I am going to install a Digital RPM switch this weekend to shut off the spray for the higher HP shot.

Also never use the DR mod for part throttle shifts this has been said over and over and over again. ITS A WOT MOD ONLY!!!!!!

Tdogg, how fast have you run with the DR Mod?

2k2whitemaxi, let me know when you're heading to the track. I might be able to hookup with you there.

Yes...WOT is the only time to use it. Going to the track and going WOT are usually one in the same

The fastest time I ran was 14.6 with the mod at the track. I have never ran without using it at the track. I have ran without it on the street(not a good idea) but noticed a differents. The only other mod I have is an intake.

I agree, only use it WOT. Jime wired in a WOT switch I believe in his old car to "automatically" activate the drop resistor. Not so easily done with the drive by wire in the 2k2+ Max's. But there isnt any negative side effects for the transmission by using the mod, as allowing faster shifts means less heat buildup in the transmission. Heat is a major concern, so reducing slippage, you reduce heat, therefore good for tranny. Now for engine mounts, well you've all felt it bang into gear. Probly not too good at low speeds for the engine mounts. But at WOT, it is a nice crisp shift.

can you explain how you wired the switch again??
to turn the DR mod on and off?

there are two wires going into the plug. Cut one of these wires. To each one of the ends you just cut, attach a long wire (4 feet or so) and run them thru the firewall into the cabin. So now in the cabin you have two wires. Attach each of these to a simple "on/off" switch. By leaving this switch in the "on" position the setup will act as if nothing was ever done and the drop resistor plug is still plugged in. Then when you want hard shifts, turn the switch "off" and it effectively "unplugs" the drop resistor plug, making for hard shifts.

That all make sense?

No ground.

I always hook mine up to a WOT switch, when I had the 4th Gen I put in on the throttle body, now that I have drive-by-wire I put it under the gas pedal.

Just make sure you get a switch that has NC (normally closed) capabilities. See the pic below, this switch has both so you just connect one wire to the common and the other to the NC and when the switch is made the circuit is broken. Switches are available at appliance shops, I got these for just over a $1 each.

Like bigdo26 says you can hook up to a manual switch too but I like the no brainer approach then I don't have to think about it when I am racing or any other time I go WOT.

ya i thought about doin the gas pedal thing too, probly would work out better overall. Take your pic, both work and jime's approach makes sure when you go WOT you're Max is always gonna shift firm, a good thing IMO
