knock Sensor Location
knock Sensor Location
Will anyone help me locate the KS is on a 2k?
After reading many posts I am suspecting it may be the culprit. My car is dieing after driving on the freeway and then pulling into a parking lot and placeing the auto in park. It runs fine when driving and does not seem to do it after short trips.
Any other thoughts?
Thanks for reading!

Personally it doesn't sound like a knock sensor to me but I don't know all that much about it.
Have you checked for any codes?
How about Vac Leaks?
The car has been acting up for the last week and then today, for the first time, it set off the ses light.
I had autozone scan the codes a few minutes ago, it shows a P0140, Bank 1 Sensor 2. Is this covered under the 80k emissions warrenty?
Is it true a ks problem will not set the ses light? Is it possible to test the ks with out removing it or the intake?
Sorry my post is filled with questions, thanks for your help.

It's possible for a knock sensor to cause an engine stall but usually it does it in a very messy way.
The knock sensor is just listening for engine knock -- when it "hears" it, it tells the ECU to alter the engine's timing. If the knock sensor goes on the fritz (hears knocks all the time) the car will misfire and run like junk, but usually stay running, and it will do this at idle and at all speeds.
Your symptoms sound different. If your car is a 5-speed check for the fuel cut TSB. If the engine quits smoothly, as if you had turned off the key, and does not shudder or jerk, I'd be looking somewhere other than the knock sensor. Possibly loss of cam/crank sensor signals or a TPS issue.
O2 sensors are covered only under 3/36 warranty. There is a TSB out which fixes a problem where the ECU reports bad O2 sensors -- the fix is NOT warranty (as far as replacing the o2 sensors) but the ECU part of the fix (reprogram/replace) is 8/80 warrantied.
So:
1. Find out if your car is affected by fuel cut or o2 sensor TSBs.
2. If it is, have them performed. It cost me about $130 parts and labor for the TSB (replace both rear o2 sensors and reprogram ecu)
3. See if the reprogrammed ECU fixes your stalling issue. If not, diagnose it further.

ON my '96 the knock sensor does not light the CEL light but by using the scanner it does report a knock sensor error. I would expect the knock sensor code would have shown during the scan if the knock sensor is bad. Yes you can check the resistance without removing the sensor. Just remove the connection that goes to the sensor and test per the factory service manual.
The knock sensor is literally a high frequency microphone. The ECM has a circuit in it which is designed to listen to the microphone and capture the sounds of "pinging". If the sound is detected, the timing is retarded. You would probably notice a general loss of power and rough running if your timing was continually being retarded. On the flip side, if the knock sensor was no longer detecting knock, such as if the mic had burned out, then you might begin to hear pinging, etc. I don't think you have a bad knock sensor. You might have a clogged fuel filter or dirty fuel injectors. I would also suggest dumping in some Tekron and see if that helps the situation.
Thanks for all your help.
Since the code was a P0140 I replaced the Bank 1 sensor 2 Friday night, but the problem is still there.
I have not cleared the ECM yet, I wanted to see if the light would go out on its own. It has not.
Paralyse, how would I find out if my car is affected by the tsb's you mentioned?
Thanks again.
