Car and Driver Maxima HID theft article - July 04

I know this was posted in the OT forum, but many don't have OT access and this is a 5th gen. issue.

Interesting and disturbing read. Over 700 thefts! This is the first I've seen of the official #'s. Anyone else read it yet?

I honestly think 700 is a low number for these theft throughout the county. I'm pretty sure it should be in the thousands.

HID solution

700 in NY just this year I bet. I know people who have had theirs stolen 2 or 3 times. I'm afraid to park my car anywhere but a garage. And in NY that can be up to $50 a night. Why hasn't someone come up with some type of grills to put over the lights? Similar to the things they use on SUVs. There's gotta be a better way.

At least Bedard sees the lawsuit against for being completely retarded, which it is.

But $277 for a SINGLE HID BULB? Now THAT'S truly criminal.

In the first paragraph of the scanned article, it says that the 756 number is statewide for NJ. So, the nationwide numbers should be a LOT higher. We can only assume that the numbers come from police records. Since there are probably a number of people who wouldn't have reported the theft, the actual numbers for NJ are probably even higher.

And as far as being "over-lawyered", the cynic in me says that this writer and his paper are about to find out, since I would wager at least some people who have their lights stolen will now try to sue the paper for reporting the method that can be used to quickly and easily steal them.

Does anyone have Bedard's email address or an address at Car and Driver so we can personally bombard him with 'thank yous' for describing how to steal the HIDS?

We should also send our 'thank yous' all the up the line of to the owner and publisher of Car and Driver.

since the article said "through February", I would take that to mean Jan and Feb totals (ie YearToDate through Feb). But still, 750 in only 2 months in just one state! That's crazy!

That works out to almost 5000 a year, and that's only the reported ones!

Remind me not to drive up to NJ/NY anytime soon without a heavily guarded garage lined up first!

People have always told me a large part of NJ is a piece of shiit. Apparently so are many of the people who live there!!

Get a freakin life. I mean really, is it so important to have HID headlights on the theives poser cars that everybody KNOWS doesn't come with HID headlights, to risk going to jail if caught? It's not like stealing food to live.

Yeah, and what's up with Car and Driver actually printing the description of how to steal the headlights. Come on, I've always wondered about the stupid journalists who do things like that. It's like those media people who report, "a home made bomb was found and it's quite potent, strong enough to bring down a 3 story building. It's a simple combination of fertilizer, this, that, and the other thing, that you can buy at any Home Depot." WHAT!!!!

Are the media people so obscure that they don't realize they are actually CONTRIBUTING to the increase in crime.

I also didn't know how they did it. And I'm sure some questionable 16 year old whose always wanted HID headlights on his riced up Civic that didn't know, now knows as well, and the temptation might be too much for him to pass up if he sees a 02/03 Maxima in a dark parking lot now too!!

Thanks Car and Driver, you could of (AND SHOULD HAVE) left that description out of your article. What's up Csababeasbe Csererersar did the extra sun that shines down on you bald head burn off a few extra brain cells? Enough to NOT realize during your editing that the "how to" lesson should be cut out?

They're pretty good about printing people's responses. They actually printed one of my letters a few years back when the horrid oval infested Taurus was released and the Accord was getting blander by the minute. My sole claim to fame.
