I finally got my car back from the dealer who replaced the auto tranny. They didn't tell me anything about a break in period etc., so I was wondering..did you have to go thru a break in period (drive @ less than 3K rpm..not at same speed for long periods of time etc)?

Also, do you guys know if the trannies they're replacing with are any stronger than the old ones?

 

Its smart to let it break in for a bit, at least I was told to do that on my bad weather car. We had to get the tranny replaced on our 89 Max and he told us to take it easy for 500 miles or so and to do alot of stop and go, I also noticed it shifted wierd initially.

 

the transmission does not require any breakin per the service manual, but you should allow for about 500 miles (as monte said) for good measure. The replacement tranny is identical to the one taken out. You have to flush the fluid every 20-25k not 30. I let the first run go to 30k, and the fluid was totally black. Im at 46k and my fluid is again black, Im gonna go with 20k service intervals TOPS from now on.

As a side note, get a tranny cooler. I just did, and the shifts are crisper now due to the lowered fluid temps.

 

I was told that they don't do a full flush but a drop and fill for the Maxima trannies. Is that true?? They said that Nissan doesn't recommend a full flush. Sounds fishy to me.
