First, turn off your caps lock. Second, turn off your caps lock. But seriously, you need to find out what that code is for and being a 2000 with 59k miles, I'd say your factory warranty is long gone.

thanks i guess, the code means bank 1 catalyst failure.i have seen people saying that you might need to upgrae your pcm or one or both mine oxygen sensors and also might be my catalyst?im just trying to find out were should i start cuss if i go to the dealer they will try to rip me off.Im thinking if i can just ask them to upgrade my pcm but then again i think they might try or force me too replace my oxygen sensors.
please reply with ideas or clues but not just to talk ish.

I was in the same boat you're in about 3 months ago. Out of Warranty with the 420 code. Tell the dealer you know what the code is and the ECU needs reprogramming. They'll say, we'll have to get it on the computer anyway. Tell them you expect it to be fixed according to the emissions warranty. They'll say, "we'll check on that...". The dealer ended up not charging me for it, but I've heard many people on the forum say they did get charged. goodluck!

Famous code 0420, I am one of the lucky owners of that F^&*&^* code.
Quick summary of what I've had done.
O2 sensor, only 1 by the radiator, light came back.
Main cat replaced, light came back. (Random Tech)
ECU re-programmed with the latest upgrades that are supposed to clear code, a week ago.
Also, had throttle body cleaned, and injectors by the dealer.
Code just came back on, again.
Dealer is persistant my main pre-cat by the radiator has to be the problem. They want $800.00
What to do?
I may just gamble and replace the other O2 sensor??
Anyone out there with a Nissan Technical degree???
Thanks
P.S.
The ecu reprogram will run you about 105.00 labor, but if you have under 70k miles it should be free. At least in CA, anyhow. Mine has 112K

if it does not affect performance and fuel economy, just leave it. mine turned on for 3 times already in these past three months. let it sit for 2 weeks, it turned off again.

P0420 Three Way Catalyst Bank 1.
P0430 Three Way Catalyst Bank 2.
Both have TSB (Bulletins) Not Campaign.(CA Spec Vehicles only.)
some required oxygen sensors replaced, some required front(B2) or rear(B1) catalysts replaced. Both result in ECM reflash, which takes 30 minutes.
Applies to 7/70 emissions warranty.
Nissan's systems will detect if a vehicle has a Salvage Title and print up as "Some warranties may not be applicable to vehicle."

I did the $141 reflash and it worked. I never got a SES light again. Although sometimes I wish I had enough cash to get that BI rear 02 sensor replaced. The tech did show me a printout from the consult II saying that the reflash fixed the problem. I paid $141 bucks cuz when I walked in they charged me for a diagnostic fee on top of the reflash labor (even though I knew what the code was). I was at 95370 miles so the 8/80 thing didn't apply.

arite so, i just got an ses light and pulled a p0240 at autozone. i read a few threads and apparently, the problem is most likely my O2 sensor. However, can this also be that the ECU is screwy? should i first just got my ECU updated? Is this covered by warranty (i have a 2000)? How much is it to replaced the O2 sensor?

ahh i made this thread right around the same time, http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=319578 what should I do? :| I found the sensor, even a sensor simulator..Someone help! =)

god, its the blind leading the blind in here. its a thread of wrong information.
here you go

btw, since its a ECU glitch it wouldn't affect smog check. However you can't pass smog with a check engine light on anyways
