want y-pipe but have cali emissions

Hi everyone,

I have a question about exhaust mods and what route to take.
I have cali emissions on my car (2002-se).
I have read, on this site someplace ,that a y-pipe will only remove one pre-cat on a car with cali emissions,
and headers are needed to remove both pre-cats.

My questions are

(1) Is the above staement true
...if it is
(2) would a y-pipe be a waste of time for me.

(3) with headers do you use y-pipe or do you need to buy custom exhaust.

Just a curious newbie....
In general, what are the stages of exhaust from the manifold back to the muffler.

Thanks for your help

With headers you don't need a y-pipe. The piping of the headers is complete from the block to the main catalytic converter.

I have heard that y-pipes on 2k2 and 2k3 maximas don't show a drastic increase in performance as they do with the 2k and 2k1 maximas.

Hotshot headers would be your best bet for increased performance. As far as how they effect emissions I am not sure. I do not know if they will pass on a cali emissions test.

Anyone know?

the cali spec comment about removing one precat only applies to 2k-2k1. the y pipes for 2k2-k3 do not remove any precats. the headers will remove both however. the headers will incorporate the y pipe. i run the 3.5 hotshot headers on my 2k1 and i think they are a great product for the money. as for a y pipe being a waste of time, you might want to hear that from someone else with more experience. from what i remember, everyone said the warpspeed y hardly did anything and the cattman had more power all around but still under what headers could offer.

Thank you for your comments.
I was leaning toward the headers anyway and you both seem to agree they are the better way to go.

thanks
