Need Advice Codes 138,139

Obviously I searched and came across 2 threads containing information on these error codes, however I can't determine the correct course of action! Right now it seems as if I need to go to the dealer and reset the ecu, if the SES comes on again I need to consider replacing the sensor! please advise me on exactly what steps I should be taking!

Thanks in adavance!

If you can tell me what the error codes MEAN, we all might be able to help. I would help you further...but my ESM is 5K miles away right now!

Code Number: PO138

Troubleshooting PO138: The PCM has determined that the imput voltage from oxygen sensor 2 in Bank 1 is too high for current operating conditions. (oxygen sensor 1 is closest to the cylinder head before the cat converter, while sensors 2 & 3 are located further downstream and are typically mounted in or after ther cat converter) (BANK 1 identifies the location of cylinder #1, while BANK 2 identifies the cylinders on the opposite bank)

Code Number: PO139

Troubleshooting PO139: The PCM has determined the response time for OXYGEN SENSOR 2 in BANK 1 was too slow during testing.

FYI: I have an Injen intake, Cattman Y and R/T cat converter! The car is 2000 cali spec 5 speed!

Ok

OK, I was pretty sure thats what it was all about. Here is the story on this...first check out this TSB

This will explain that an ECM reprogram is needed and O2's need to be replaced. I just did this myself about 3 weeks ago. I fought with Nissan and the results of it are:

1) To get the ECM reprogrammed under warranty, I had to PROVE (via a receipt with Nissan Part numbers) that I replaced with OEM sensors
2) I did get to replace the O2's myself (easy job) and I got them from DAVEB. I did not get aftermarket because I dont splice sensor wires and the ones I found aftermarket were only 5-8 bucks cheaper.

I wanted to just get the ECM reprogram because I was not convinced that the O2's were actually bad. Just that the ECM tollerance was to tight for the slightly lazy O2's. But I could not get it done that way. So for the quote of 500 bucks that Nissan quoted...I got the job done myself for about 225=235 and I bought a wrench needed to finish the job correctly.

Just depends on how you want to address this. Since you are an 00, o2's are out of warranty but the ECM is covered under 8/80. If you got OVER 80K on the car, you should only pay .7 hour for a ECM reprogram. I paid about 108 a sensor from DaveB.

Good Luck!!

Cliffnotes: Your ECM and O2's need work.

Wow, thanks so much for your prompt and curtious response! I really appreciate the help. My final question, how soon do I need to address these issues, is it something I can put off for a week? I am going to cali on thursday...not a good time for this to happen, but i guess there never is?

thanks again

I am not a professional mechanic, but a week probably wont do anything but hurt your gas mileage. I wouldnt be so keen on driving it a long time that way, as I dont know the long term effects, but have read about people driving a long time on a O2 CEL and not have to many problems other than gas mileage issues.
