Help- Paint chips!! (not in FAQ)...

I know this topic has been visited before so forgive me. I am now commuting on the highway to work and I have been noticing more and more paint chips on the hood above the grill. I remember this as a topic on the org some months back. Some suggested going to Nissan but when I called them they said buy a bra for protection but that is not a solution.

A guy in the office has an '03 350Z and is having the same problems. Any suggestions out there ???

You could get a 3m clear bra. Check out housecor's site. Lots of info there. Very helpful.

the price you pay for a maxima definetely skimps you out on the paint. Bottom line, nissan paint sucks. It used to be of better quality but now its just cheap.

So if you get the nose and hood painted by any decent body shop, is it less likely to chip? Or do you need to specify special paint, or get them to use more hardener in the paint or something?

On the bumper because it is plastic they should use both a plastic primer and adhesion promoter because paint does not stick as well to plastic. As long as they use a good quality primer and paint on the hood you should not have as many problems with chips. This can get expensive because you have to sand all the original paint and primer off to do a good job. Very labor intesive. On plastic you can not use a paint stripper. Also more coats of paint does not mean you'll get less chips. The opposite is true. Paint adheres better to platic or metal better than it does to itself. 2-3 coats should be good.

Hard to sand paint off a plastic bumper I'm sure. So if a place says they won't be sanding all the paint and primer off my bumper before painting, should I go somewhere else?

I have 3 chips on the roof because of which the metal beneath has started to rust as i can see the area around the chip bubbling and increasing in size. I'll probably get it painted myself when it starts looking really ugly..for now i just use touchup paint

I just ordered one so I'll let you know. My bumper is hideous also and I have a huge chip on my hood thats rusting. Does anyone have more specific directions on how to make it look good other than just put the paint on and then the clearcoat?
