Got a Maxima last year 2000, Black and its running exceptionally smooth. It's an SE.

After advancing timing on my Acura, I got great power gains and would like to know how to do this on a Maxima. I want to do that because I usually get expensive gas.

Also, do any of you use teh K&N replacement box filter? Does it improve power?

How many of you here are satisfy with the SE suspension? I think its too soft........

I'm afraid you can't advance the timing on the Max. The K&N drop-in filter doesn't add much power by itself, but it may be better if you have an OSCAI (homemade CAI).

welcome to the board. i'm not sure how many people have done this yet, i can't remember any off hand. most people with mods have switched to the k&n panel filter. do a search for OSCAI to find a great addition to the k&n. also, what kind of acura did you have? there has been some discussion about how the max compares to the tl lately and someone who has experience with both would have a good perspective on this debate.

I had a Acura Legend and the advancing of timing was just as easy as screwing the timing counter clock wise 1cm. All done in less than 30sec including poping the hood.

The Max has a direct ignition (no distributor) and the timing is controlled by the ecu. There are aftermarket ecus (JWT, UPRD) that apparently advance the timing via software, but they work only on the early 4th gen. Maxes (95-96?). I know what you mean about the Acura/Hondas, I did the same on my Honda and it works well. As for the suspension, you can add a FSTB and RSB, or go as far as replacing the springs and shocks with Eibach/Tokico.

I am not familiar with the term CAI, RSB, FSTB.
Can any of you explain this to me? I am thinking of buying some strut bars / sway bars for the 2k Max, but obviously I couldn't because their site don't sell stuff as it said it would!

CAI - Cold Air Intake
RSB - Rear Sway Bar
FSTB - Front Strut Tower Brace

Check the parts list.

What year was your legend?? I was really considering getting a 2-door legend before I got my new max. The styling of the second gen Legend is great! Add that to a six-speed v6 and I'm sure the car would scream. I thought I read somewhere that the Legend was a front-wheel drive car, but the engine was actually mounted transversely (north to south). Is this the case? If so, how did that work out? I'm pretty sure that 99% of front wheel drive cars have their engines mounted longitudinally (east-west).

When you say expensive gas, do you mean high octane? I believe the maxima already runs on a 92 octane gas, therefore, advancing will require a higher octane.

Well, my Legend is 94. I am not pretty sure how the engine was mounted north to south or easy to west, but all I know is that the engine's timing belt is pointing horizontally towards the front. THe engine itself is placed horizontally right behind the front wheels. I am not sure about the GS 230hp engine on the Legend, but my 200hp with advanced timing is very aggressive at 4krpm. All I can say is that Maxima should be a better choice since it has a 17" wheels.
