ECU update = keys reprogram ???

I asked my dealer to perform an ECU update, which he calls "computer reprogramming", and he told me to bring all my keys so he can reprogram them. He said since its a new ECU, all key codes are erased. Ive never seen this mentioned on the .org. Is this true?

That's BS. So many people have resetted the ECU and they didn't have to reprogram their keys. BTW, just reset it yourself.

Yeah, disconnect the negative cable to the battery overnight. I'm actually doing this tonight.

For 2000 Maximas "Resetting" Allows the computer to do just that. Then when you bring it back online it has a learning mode which will recognize and adjust to any changes/upgrades you might have made.

OMG, WTF is wrong with you people? Haven't you ever heard of ECU Update??? ECU or ECM update means replacing the Engine Control Module's(ECM) software with a newer version. It can only be done with the dealer's CONSULT-II tool.

TallB'00SE: no, resetting the ECM does not upgrade, update or reprogram it, it only clears stored information like diag codes and fuel trim numbers.

Jeez, and I thought I needed help...

If anyone cares...I went to Bay Ridge Nissan, told them to reprogram the ECM. They charged me 127+tax and did nothing(I checked the calibration id). They even admited it, and they explanation was "We cant reprogram it if there is no check engine light". I also asked them about ignition timing advance, they told me "these cars dont have ignition timing". I've had enough, and I called Nissan consumer affairs and got a guy to
1. find out if I am right and they are wrong
2. to register a complaint with Bay Ridge Nissan
But even he admitted that there isnt much they can do...

What's to find out?

The dealer is giving you the run-around. Factory Service Manual clearly spells it out. What they mean by "we can't reprogram it if there is no check engine light" is that the TSB says NOT to perform it unless there is a CEL or Nissan will not warranty it. Apparently, they can't read and if the ECM software ID matches, they can reflash to the new/improved version. Also, I've heard of that dealer on here a few times and IIRC...all were something like "don't go to Bay Ridge Nissan" or "Bay Ridge Nissan fuked me", etc.. I'd personally go to another dealer.

BTW, which TSB reflash are you after here? Also, what ECM part number did you see?

ntb01-036 or whichever is for the MAF sensor.
23710-2Y918 - current ECM part number
nissan-techinfo.com has a tool where you can find out which ECM part number is the updated one for your current ECM. Mine is 23710-2Y922.
Id go to another dealer, but who's to say they wont *** me as well. I called SI nissan, and they plane refused to do it if there is no code. Kings nissan clamed it was a 2 hour job(its a .7 hour as far as i remember). So, unless someone knows personally a nissan tech who will flash it for me....

just drive around with the gas cap off for a few miles and then go back.

if that doesn't work, crawl under your car and yank real hard on one of your o2 sensor wires.

if worst comes to worst you may have to sabotage your MAF

Thats hillarious. Whats even funnier is that I already thought of that, but if they didnt do it the first time what makes you think they'll do it now?

I had my ECM reprogrammed on my 02 when my rear bank 02 sensors were replaced. It took quite a while for the consult to complete the reprogram. While it was being reprogrammed, the car could not be touched or you might have to start all over again. They even hook up an external 12 volt power source to ensure the battery voltage doesn't drop to much while the ignition switch is on. And yes, there are a lot of people that confuse resetting with reprogramming.
