I have had a 5-spd 2001 Max SE for almost two months now, and I love it. For a car with a manual transmission, though, the handbrake feels really cheesy and flimsy, and the shifter boot and **** are a bit insubstantial.

Has anyone replaced the shift boot and/or **** on a gen 5 Maxima? I am curious whether the Momo universal boot will fit, and what needs to be done to remove the shift ****. Unlike the Honda and Toyota cars I have had, the **** does not seem to simply unscrew.

Also, does anyone have a source for a replacement handbrake lever and boot?

I just replaced the shift boot and **** in my 2k today with a Momo universal boot and short anatomico ****. Yes, the boot fits just fine. When you remove your old boot, you need to take the metal ring off it. This requires taking the old boot apart. Place the metal ring inside the Momo boot and secure it into the console piece. It looks and feels much better than stock. Momo makes a really nice boot. It makes the leather interior in max seem cheap.

To remove the ****, put a towel around the old boot (so you won't damage it) and with a pipe wrench twist it counter clockwise. There will be a snap and then the **** should twist easily.

Momo boot

Thanks, Beatlemax. Do you have to remove the section of the console that surrounds the boot? How do you do that?

Thanks again for your contribution!

You will have to remove the console.
To remove the console, do the following:
1. open up the bin next to the 12V outlet and pull out
the tray
2. with a Philips head screw driver, remove the screw
that was hidden by the tray
3. grab the console at the base of the boot and pull it
up...it will snap and come free
4. with that up, pull the console down toward the floor

The console should now be loose except for some electrical connections. You can either leave them attached and twist the console sideways to give yourself better access or detach them. I had a hard time with this and only disconnected one.

Good luck with the installation and enjoy the boot.

I guess I would still ask the question if anyone took the hand brake apart, I tried fitting the MOMO hand brake and that would be the only way, unless you would like to cut and grind your stock hand brake handle to fit MOMO but this would mean no going back. I just love the way momo looks I got the momo shift **** (cobra) and want to match it with momo hand brake (alumin). Thanks for any input and a good cheap place that has MOMO stuff is
