Service Engine Soon light all of a sudden?

Hey everyone, I was driving down the street today and noticed my "Service Engine Soon" light was on. I haven't done any mods except the foglight mod and had the oil changed like 1500 miles ago. I was wondering if there's any way I can find out why the light is on other than taking it to the dealership and if there's anything I should watch out for if I do end up taking it to the dealership since I've never taken it in before. By the way I have about 76K miles on my car. Please let me know as I am not sure if it's safe to be driving my car around anymore! Thanks.

Yes it's safe to drive. It's probably an O2 sensor. bring it to autozone for a free diagnostic (call first to make sure that your local AZ does them), instead of paying $60 to the stealership.

First AZ I took mine took a year back couldn't get the code, because his scanner sucked, but the next place I went to said it was an o2 sensor and I swapped it myself. No problems in 33k miles on my 00

or you can disconnet the battery overnight and see if the light goes away in the morning.

It's better to see what code(s) is/are stored in the ECU before trying to clear them. If it is a hard code, the SES light will come back on within a short period after starting the engine.

Do you'll think it could have anything to do with driving in really hard rain? In houston the other day it was raining like crazy and I drove through it, shortly after I saw my SES light come on.

I had the same thing happen the other day. Drove around for an hour, no light. Start to pass a car, light goes on but car drives fine. Reset the ECU on Fri and SES light gone.

i highly doubt rain had anything to do with it. i dont understand why everyone is so concerned with having the light off. i would rather know what is wrong with the car and then have the problem repaired/replaced than worry about a little light being on. take it to autozone to have the code pulled, if you dont have then take it to a shop and find out whats going on.

I went by Autozone and they said they were gonna charge me $85 to pull the code. They had an OBDII Reader for sale for $88 so I bought that and pulled the code on my own. The code it gave me was a P0135, which is an "O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 1)." I reset the light and it went away but I was wondering if this is something serious or not. Exactly what is this also?

sounds like you have a primary o2 sensor acting up. have you used any fuel system cleaner lately? i cant believe autozone is charging now but you made a good choice in purchasing a unit, i know mine has helped me plenty of times along with a handful of others.

I actually used a fuel system cleaner when I first got my car before I realized that stuff is trash. That was in March and this is the first SES I've gotten since I've purchased the car so....

Another question I have is since I used the OBD tool to erase the code and reset my SES light, will the SES light up again if there is still a problem with my O2 Sensor or has my erasing it made it "forget" about the O2 sensor problem?
