Tomei Cams installed in 3.5
All, last weekend SR20DEN and I finally installed the Tomei 264 cams into the 3.5 Maxima engine. Don't know if we're the first, but I haven't seen any others yet, Anyhow...car isn't running just yet, there are few little odds and ends to tie up but I will update at a later time with dyno results of course. But for now....pics

Cool I think there is only one 350z I know of with the tomei cams and he is dynoing the highest out of all the same 350z with same mods. All bolt ons, ecu, and cams and I think he dynoed 301 whp. Everybody else is dynoing like 280-285 whp.

Hey I noticed you put super gray gasket maker in your moter mounts or is it something else. I might do that. I am not sure if the gasket material is strong enough.. I don't want to have my car down anymore though. But when I get a chance I will try something like that.

Actually its not that much work, its the same process of going through changing the spark plugs , just taking the extra step of removing the intake manifold,disconnecting a few wires and connectors, then removing the valve covers on top. You are probally looking at 45min to an hour more of work. Once the intake manifold is off, its down hill from there.
The tricky part is tightening the bolts to the cams back on to proper spec.If you don't you will screw yourself royally. Watched to many of my friend blow up there engine because of over tightening the cam bolts.
Please post results ASAP! I am very excited about this project! As you know i have been talking and saving for cams as we speak. Cams will give you a solid 15 WHP and you should feel a huge diffrence in your mid to top end significantly!
Take offs will be alot more noticable!!! Did this set up in TTZ!
I am glad you are the first ones to pioneer this route with the Max!

Thanks for the compliment but you are 150% wrong on this one. The timing chain cover, VTC's, timing chains...ALL that must come out. We were there for 14 hours just doing that part of it.

Did you guys have air tools? That awefully long to get to some cams. But then again the Vq is much diffrent from the VG.

No, the Super Gray was for the different parts that needed to have silicone put back on them (timing chain cover, oil pan, etc). The motor mounts are Place Racing motor mounts. Please don't fill your's with silicone.

I can't say specifically what they'll do yet. I have heard all sorts of rumors and bull....so I will just see for myself what happens and post it.

"You'll lose power on low end" "You'll gain power after 4000" I have seen dynos where the power jumps in equal amounts across the whole power band and then I have seen loss in low end with a huge gain in mid to hi end. So, until I dyno, i'll just be happy they are in.

I think that if you can make an engine bullet proof pistons cams and all, and rag the hell out of it and have it keep coming back for more, then more power to you. also i am subscribing. Some much new innovation on the forum with so many dumba$$e$ giving useless knowledge. I will never understand how someone can say it is not worth it without havin even seen a dyno of what the maxima's engine will do. Also what would be wrong with trying to make an all motor maxima; would that be so bad

I didn't know that you had NOS on your car, you do need a bullet proof engine to run juice.
All I was trying to say is that for that kind of money you can do other mods (like headers), get the same hp and have money left over.

Thanks for sharing this info. Please don't let some misinformed people stop your from posting more details.
When you get a chance could you lets us know about any of the difficulties you came across? I know the 350Z guys who have installed the 268's had to use alternate lifters.
Also, for those who don't read the 350Z forums, a handfull of those members have ran the Tomei 268's (slightly more aggressive profile than the 264's) and have commented on them making very good power with little loss of low end torque. "Very streetable" as one guy put it.
With the cams, modified IM, raised rev limiter, and some A/F ratio tuning, this setup should make some serious power.

direct port NX system (not yet)
wierd a.s.s. manifold mod (not yet)
transmission rebuild (not yet)
So...AFTER I get all of the things done that I have (see where it says 'check') you tell me what is next to 'bulletproof' the engine? Let me help....nothing up there has anything to do with 'bulletproofing' the engine.

Because if you go any more aggressive, you have to do things like swap valvesprings. I wanted some power...and I still want to run nitrous eventually. I just think less aggressive cams will enable me to do that. I still may have to look into other things...rods, pistons, retainers, etc...but hopefully the stock internals will hold up decently.
