Lets see how many 5th generations have Spoilers. State whether it came with the car or was it an aftermarket installation.

Standard SE spoiler on my Max. I read some where that if you add the spoiler afterwards (for example on a GLE) the the trunk needs an adjustment for the extra weight other wise it won't work properly.

Having no spoiler shaves .01 secs off my quarter mile time and adds 1 mph to my top speed :P

Spoiler

One of the reasons I bought my GXE is it had no spoiler. A spoiler is simply a fashion statement. It does nothing more than block the view to the rear and, even though slight, adds weight. It would also add a (slight) amount of drag. The reason a car would need a spoiler in the first place is if the body were designed poorly, and the air over the rear produced lift. A perfect example of that is the Audi TT. Some of the fastest cars in the world (Ferrari, Corvette) do not have spoilers, yet I've seen old Hyundai Excels with spoilers! I suppose it is a convenient place to put the CHMSL though! My car doesn't have fog lights either. Again; another fashion statement. I am thinking of adding (factory) fog lights, though, for one reason. If you see a car approaching at night and it has fog lights, it's NOT a cop!

My baby was used (GXE), but came with a spoiler (yaay!).

I'm glad I have it, makes the car look finished.

Um.. actually your TT comment is incorrect. They've added spoilers on to them due to stability problems at high speeds.

My SE has the factory spoiler. It might not add much in performance but it does make the Maxima look good.

Also... regarding vettes and ferraris not needing wings...

the only racing ferraris I could find quickly were formula one which... shockingly ALL have wings... hrrrm. You're right that they aren't needed at 0-60 but lots of members here have done 100+. I personally like having it back there at those speeds. I also like the look and for me it was more of a fashion choice but to say they have no purpose is wrong.

The spoiler on a Maxima will only reduce your top speed. The Audi TT needed a spoiler because the shape was producing way too much lift at high speeds (The similarly shaped Beetle has the same problem) such that the rear end would lose traction in high speed turns resulting in many deaths in Germany.

Spoilers on most production cars are just for show and imho quite silly. Or maybe I just wish I had plunked down an extra 5k for an SE

i got a GXE...

and as a deal with the dealer, we got them to add the spoiler with the price of the car, along with a tint. does that count as "Yes. It came with my car" or aftermarket installation?

You're absolutely right! If my Maxima were able to do 180 mph on the banking at Daytona, I'd have a spoiler too! Obviously, that GTS Corvette would be a lot faster than the one right ahead of it in the photo. I was incorrect in saying "a spoiler is simply a fashion statement". What I don't like is when street cars try to look like race cars with unneccessary cosmetic add-ons. Spoilers and aero-kits are great if you're able to go fast enough for them to be functional! I guess I'm consciously trying to avoid the "slammed Civic" look in any mods I do to my car.

I totally understand... I mean.. 10' spolier wings on civics with stock engines that never see a track are ridiculous. But I dont think most of our cars on here would be considered in the same class as "slammed Civic". Take Y2KevSE's car for example (he's always my example). He's got the body kit, lowering springs and stock SE spoiler. I think all in all it makes his car look tight. I also bet when he goes "fast enough to be put in jail" that they do add some stability to the car.

Of course the race cars are extreme examples but if the TT had to have that little lip spoiler added due to speeds it hits on the audobon... I bet our spoilers are doing something for us too when we go "fast enough to be put in jail".

When it all comes down to it... everyone has their own tastes and there is no reason you should make your car look how anyone other than you likes it so I have no idea why I typed all this.

Daniel Ralston,

The question is, who here has a spoiler that came with the car and who has an aftermarket one. What did you buy a max for? You say that the spoilers are only for looks not functionality...Well your right, but who cares. You obviously didn't buy the max because it looked like crap but had great functionality. You bought it because it looked nice, kind of like a wing to some people looks nice. Get to the point next time and say that you just don't perfer the looks of a spoiler. That's it . Leave it at that.. When I purchased my factory wing, I wasn't thinking about the performance that I getting out of it... Nor do I think anyone on this board thinks they're getting performance out of their wings... Functionality, what ever....

mine's an aftermarket and i know the spoiler is mostly for show and dress-up item for everyday street cars..unless you drive 150mph to work everyday...
but i made the purchase because i thought the car looks better with the spoiler than without.
having driving a car for a year without my spoiler kinda made me wanna try this...

Personally I love the spoiler. But I hate the fact that when you add it to a non-SE you still have the center stop light in the rear window. It looks so silly to see the spoiler lite up and the rear window light too.

i thought they are supposed to put some kind of cover over the center light if they install a spoiler on a GXE or GLE??

Unfortunately, what is supposed to happen and what actually happens are too often not the same.

Just today on my drive into work saw 1 5th gen and 1 4th gen non-SEs with spoilers that had their center light still working and uncovered, Yuchhh.

only mass production spoiler that I know of that was functional under 130mph was on the 93-98 Supra. It created something like 60lbs of downforce at 100mph and it just increased from there.

I got a question on this...but on another thread...

Porsche 911

The Porsche 911 Turbo had a functional rear wing that adjusted height and angle based on speed.

Any idea at what speed our spoiler becomes functional?
