the time had come! We MUST do something!
I owned the 5th gen SE for more than a year now, assume that I have the oldest 5th gen. After the car was washed yesturday with a soft mitt and waxing detergent, I could see how thin the paint was! No less than 0.01mm, I could see the grey metal of the car! I wanted to bring it to Nissan but my dad who knows the manager of the Nissan dealer don't want me to complain about the car!
Now, what should I do? I said to my dad, its my car! WE need to do something..... But he just keep telling me to wax the car a few more times thinking that the problem was the lack of wax!
Now I think as time pass by, our car paint will be stripped to nothing! I see Civic with paint that couldn't be scrated with keys, but my Maxima will be destroyed if I used keys to open the doors without cautions.

i've owned mine since feb. 2000 and there are some people on here who bought theirs towards the end of 1999...anyways i was washing my car today, too...and i noticed my paint
i finally got a hood chip, too...this is my first one, but it is kinda big and it looks really bad...i'd love to get a new paint job (not through nissan) but a new paint job is pretty expensive...i'd say go talk to the guy...don't go to him expecting something, just go to him and explain the issue and ask him if he can talk to nissan about this when he gets the chance...if he is friends w/ your dad, just tell him to do it as a personal favor or something

I've had mine since June of 1999. Paint chipping has been no worse than any other new car I've owned, maybe I'm lucky.
If you think you have a real defect where the paint was just not applied right, than it probably is worth talking to the dealer. If its a chip (impact from a stone) I wouldn't expect much because they have no way to know if its excessive or you've been driving down gravel roads. I'm sure you haven't, but they'll assume the worst.

Paint
I like Gerry have had no problems with my paint on any of my Maximas, but there have been many paint related posts on this site. This is my third Max SE and the only trouble i've had was with the brakes warping on both the 97 and 99 SE's and they were covered under warranty.
I have also been reading quite a few complaints in this forum about the paint quality of the 5th gen Maxima.
However, I've had my black 2k1 GLE since early October 2000 and I have not noticed any abnormal chipping despite going through a pretty tough Ohio winter. When the car is clean, it still looks showroom new. I guess I've been lucky so far.

Are you telling me your eyes can measure and detect 1/100,000th of a meter? That's only one order of magnitude from a MICRON and a TENTH the thickness of a human hair. Those are some damn impressive eyes you got there.

I've had mine since June 99
and my paint has sucked since day one, runs in clear coat . I bought the car at night
I've already gotten a credit to have the front repainted. there were tons of 2k maxes there when the paint inspector came.
I dont see the problem, the dealer doesnt decide to repaint or not, Nissan sends an inspector out. I'm at a loss to understand why you would worry about how the dealer *feels*, Nissan pays the dealer to paint the car.. The bodyshop has had to re-paint alot of maxes. ALOT! I waited. I didnt want a brand new repainted car.
