"service engine soon" light on again?!
Hey guys, Well this is probably the third time the service engine light is coming on for my 2k max. I already replaced all 6 coils, and the belts on this car , and was wondering if there were any more known problems. It all started off with me driving home from some side streets, and I just so happen to hit a pothole. It was filled with water so it was pretty hard to tell how deep it was. Anywayz, I immeidiately stopped on the side to check if everything was okay, and it was all good. Got back into the car and would you know it, the service engine light appeared on my dash. I got home safe and sound, but even after two days the lights still on. I tightned the gas cap already and went driving for a few mins, but unfortuently no luck..what exactly could be the problem?? The car's driving perfect!
Somone pls. help me out!!!
Thankz in advance...

Well Man I didn't hit a bach or something similar I was driving back to home so I set up the Cruise Control (CC) so when I press cancell the set light start to blinking I was wondering if was something minor surprice Nissan just call me to say you need ignition coil to be replace, an dmy Fu#$ing Warranty won't cover that (parts and labor is abot $667 + tax) and seriusly to put the car into garage for 2 months and call my insurance to reported loss....... By the way seems to be one of the comun problems fope this cars... 2K's
check this out

Thus from my guess, since coil #1 is faulty (P0301) it sent the bad signal to the ECM for timing (P1320) and cause the other coils to misfire (P0300).
BTW, I am in contact with Nissan North America right now regarding about these faulty coils we have in 2000/1 Maximas (TSB NTB01059 ). They do cost a lot of $$$ and Nissan should do a recall on them. I have over 140,000+ miles on my cars, so it is obvious I am out of my warantee. My Nissan North America advisor is Coleman (310-771-8473) and I have disclosed all my personal feeling about this situation to him and what other 2000/1 Maxima owner think also from the Online Petition for a Recall (http://www.petitiononline.com/NIS_IGN/petition.html)
Please...if other Maxima owner feel Nissan should a recall, call Coleman or Nissan North America (1-800-NISSAN-1) how you feel and e-sign that petition if you haven't so. I told Coleman I am #416 on that petition. My next move is to contact the BBB and the NHTSA about Nissan's reluctance for a recall.
Good luck!!!!!!!
Hey,
i too have a problem with coils. I will be buying them from twillin.
They are such BS. Maxima is considered one of the best cars out there. "The best in its class".
And they have this stupid problems with the coils.
I bought my maxima because the name holds a rank. But ever since I got my baby, I have done nothing but spend $$$$ to keep it running. I kept getting P1320 error without it telling me which coil the error came from. My timing is off and im getting 12-13 MPG.
I think I will call Coleman tomorrow!

Besides that I agree with you.... I bought my car for that idea, but no matter....
Actually, there is a way to determine which coil(s) are failing. On my car for example, I am getting the check engine light on pulled these following codes:
P1320: Bad ignition signal sensed
P0300: Mulitiple cylinder misfire
P0301: Cylinder #1 misfire
Knowing this, I pulled out my DMM (digital multimeter) and started to test each of the ignition coils on the car for resistance. On each coil there are 3 prong. They are labeled as:
1: (E)nergy
2: (G)round
3: (Ig)nition
So If you place your DMM probe on Ground and Ignition you should be able to read a resistance. Note: If you accidently probe Ground and Energy, it will show 0 ohms. A good coil will show a resistance and a bad coil will show none according the Nissan Service Manual for the 2000/1 Maxima (VQ30DE).
For my car:
Coil 1: 0 ohms
Coil 2: 1.96 K-ohms
Coil 3: 1.82 K-ohms
Coil 4: 1.84 K-ohms
Coil 5: 1.92 K-ohms
Coil 6: 1.83 K-ohms
Note:

Hey,
I too did the test on the coils, well my mechanic did. All of my coils have resistance, but I still get the code P1320.
Front Coils (Left to right, nearest to radiator)
1.35 1.32 1.16
Rear Coils:
1.26 1.25 1.10
Your resistance seems a lot greater.
None of the coils show a 0 resistance. The computer does not show which of the coil is making the misfire. I get the check engine light every 2-3 weeks.

OK, while driving today my car starts to shake, the shaking is pretty rough. When the car is in park there is no shake but when I put it in to Drive or reverse it shakes, the shaking stops about 10 mins during driving. Whats the problem? Is it the coils? haven't pulled codes yet(SES been on for about 2 or 3 weeks now).

Those numbers that Yaquito posted (along with other cut 'n paste he posted) are actually from my car and from my experience that I replied at this post:

Anyways, from my guess, there seems to be a minimum threshold in resistance before the ECM throws a P1320 code. I believe it is an early warning that 1 or more ignition coil could be on the verge of failing. From looking at you numbers, the coil that is giving the 1.10 kOhm (coil #6 according from the location you gave) could be the one giving the P1320. Just keep a close watch on that coil and monitor any misfire from that coil. A misfire code would be something like this:
P0300: multiple coil misfire --> Your car might throw this code next
P0301: Coil 1 misfire
P0302: Coil 2 misfire
P0303: Coil 3 misfire
P0304: Coil 4 misfire
P0305: Coil 5 misfire
P0306: Coil 6 misfire --> Your car might throw this code next
Once a coil is on the verge of failing, you have reduced power. When a coil does fail, your engine will run extremely rough because you are basically missing a whole cylinder working.
Summarizing, from my car, coil #1 slowly fell in resistance and the P1320 was thrown. Once the coil failed, 0 Ohms, I then got the P0301. Once I got the P0301, the timing to fire the other coils got screwed, so the P0300 appeared.

John5820-
If you have time, do pull the codes and see if you do have the P1320 code and any of the P03xx codes. That way you know for sure if its a coil problem. If you do pull a P1320 and P03xx, then pull the coils and do the resistance test to determine if your coils are on the verge of failing or if 1 or more has failed already.

Omegasrk That's right I used your nembers as reference, but Niissan toll me Number can't be diferent from car to car????? Yeah!!!! I made the same face than you , by the way, Have you had any problems with the cruise control, because everything start with that on my car and guess what Today I'd again the set light blinking, so after my quick shower I'm going to run to auto zone to run scan again ........ Not for nothing I'm thinking to hide my car and call my Ins because I'm getting tired about this coils probvlems....

Well, healthy ignition coils should all have the same resistance from 2000/01 (VQ30DE) Maxima to Maxima. Tomorrow I am picking up just one coil for now to replace the one has failed. I am going to test the resistance of that one and see how does it compare with the other 5 the are still running in my car. Hopefully there is not that much variance between them.
As for your car and the cruise control, I don't have any clear idea how did that system caused your faulty coils. If you have time, I'll read through my 2000/01 Service Manual and see if there are any relationship between both. BTW, if you could post any error code you pulled from your car, that might help me narrow your problem down.

hey I found this anybody
there's TSB # 01-059 SEP 01 Ignition Coil - MIL ON/Spark Knock/DTC P1320 Set
---------
That's the same TSB I wrote in the other tread (http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=326669)
Here is a link to the actually TSB:

Supposely, the coils have be updated and less prong to fail, but some .org members replaced their coils only to have the next set failed eventually. The new one also have this white dot one them to signify it the new revised coil. I also heard that if you are to replace your coils, the part numbers from the 2001 (VE30DE) Maxima might have a better chance in surviving longer than coils that are for the 2000 Maxima. Apparently, there are 2 sets of coils for the same type of engine. Weird. So the one coil I order is from a 2001 Maxima and I will see how that one stack up with the other 5 original ones I have in my car.
/bump
Hey what is the possibility we can Sticky this or put it on the main page and see if we can get *every* Maxima owner or .org visitor to Sign the petition?
This is one of 2 peeves I have about the 2K Maxima. The coils, and the P)420. That is literally a $1000 repair at the dealership:
$100 Diagnosis
$630 Precat and gaskets
$245 Labor
Maybe if this goes well, we can fire up another petition and talk to N.A. Nissan as they also modified the very expensive precat with a known problem.

Yeah !!! REally That sounds $$$$ ****ing wierd or not????
Yeah!!!! I don't either how this happend, but I bought the scanner at Auto Zone, and I thinkiing just in case to get a set of coils 2Y1 to tried as you said if this happend again...... About this CC I give up!!!!! I'd been trying anything and 3 differents NIssan Mec. are involve with this isssue and they toll me just replace the control unit for your Cruise Control(Yeap
) It gotta be something more simple.....Anyway man thanks for your help people like you make this web site the best...
I would sign the petition for a MAF problem, my coils are just fine even thou I repleaced all 6 of them durring my 60K mile tuneup. I been pretty lucky with my 01 it gets the shieet beaten out of on daily basis, road rage, U name it, its been through it. I have 100K miles with no problems. Why would you wanna get rid of the car for such simple problems ? Coils cost around 300 bux for all 6- I got all 6 new ones on Ebay from a guy for 90 bux, yes I checked the part #s with my Nissan F.A.S.T CD and they are the updated ones. I sold my old good coils for 200 bux to a local guy who needed a set for his 00. There is a self diagnosis procedure outlined in the FSM for cruise control diagnosis.
