Auto Tranny Cooler

these seem like more of a preventative mod and i know they can help to lower tran fluid temperatures which is good for the tranny, but do they really help that much?

i find myself using the auto shift gate (D,3,2) more often and would like to continue to do so without extra wear on the tranny. i'm just wondering if the cooler is a worth while mod or more of a placebo mod. it seems the tran is pretty strong and should be able to handle it.

the coolers seem easy to install, but is it really that much of a benefit over flushing the tranny fluid on a regular basis?

from what i've read here (no other experience with them) tranny cooler = good; oil cooler = bad.

but do you *need* one? just manually shifting isn't hard on the tranny, but do you run the car hard? do you auto-cross... tow anything... race as often as possible?

if the answers are "no, no, and no" then don't bother and save the money for something you need.

It is really hard to gauge what something like that does for you. Yeah, the tranny fluid temp does get cooler, but for how long? What good does it do? Will it help prevent wear? I guess it is one of those things (like an oil cooler) that you just have to trust works and does at least half of what they say it does.

Putting on a tranny cooler is easy and good preventative maintenance for your car. I put one on and flushed the tanny at the same time... can I tell a difference, no, but I'll find out in a few years.

if you are getting one without a fan, it is pretty much useless in local, low speed driving.

my ATF temp reads 150F on freeway and 180 - 210F in local. The amb. temp is around 80F.
