I've done this for 3 years with no ill effects on anything in the engine bay. I do this twice a year and it keeps the engine really clean.

1. With a luke warm engine hose it down with a light spray of water.
2. Spray the whole engine bay, encluding the engine with full strength Simple Green.
3. Wait five to ten minutes - don't let it dry - then rince everything off real good with a light spray. Try not to spray the alternator directly. you might have to scrub on some real dirty/oily spots.
4. Let dry for a couple of hours then start it up.

I heard the best way is "pressure steam cleaning" it, which is how the dealerships do it, unfortunately we do not have access to that equipment.
I have used Engine Brite with a pressure cleaner (yes, carefully of course) with much success.

Most definately cover up your intake and alt. Dont ever use pressurized water, use normal water out of your garden hose. Simple Green is good Gunk makes a good degreaser as well.

Too damn loud, I have no resonator and a Y pipe, I set off car alarms all over the place, the idle is GREAT though it sounds like a V8

1. spray down with GUNK foaming degreaser

2. let soak in for 10 minutes
3. hose off

most important step...
4. spray down with a foaming tire cleaner spray (any remaining dirt runs off, it gives the engine bay a nice shine, and it forms a protective layer so dirt wont stick. it makes future cleaning easier)

results -

I would cover the intake, battery, alternator and if you can, the valve cover. The valve cover is known to leak and might soak into your ignition coils. I had a bad experience where mine leaked and got water inside to the point where my coils weren't firing correctly until they dried off.
