Spark Plug question
Spark Plug question
My AE is at 82k miles and it is time for some new spark plugs. I have been reading the forums here and I cannot get a clear consensus or documented proof on what to buy.
It is clear that NGK plugs are the way to go, but not sure which model. Frequency of maintenance is not a problem for me, I try to do most of my own maintenance. Neither is cost. So what I am looking for is good performance, good fuel economy, a good plug.
Copper is a good conductor but the tip of the electrode is very blunt and can allow for greater electron dissipation and therefore a weaker spark as there is less focused energy at the electrode.
Platinum is a better conductor of electricity and the electrode point is sharper, therefore theoretically allowing for a better spark because of the focused single point of charge and of the higher temperature that Platinum can withstand.
The Iridium's allow for even more of the same and has a sharper point., etc etc etc.
The OE parts are Laser Platinum plugs, which are good. But I have read about using V-Power copper plugs with good results. My driving habits are mostly highway at descent speeds. I also accelerate hard and like to be able to get good power output, fast and efficient.
So my question is who has used what plug and what have been the best results so far? I am tempted to go with the Iridium plugs as the seem to be the best on the market and statistically speaking.
Also while I am asking about ignition stuff... What torque should the plugs be tighten to when installing and it is worth buying upgraded low resistance ignition wires, and better distributor?
