Short Shifter

I just installed a short shifter and I am very please. Anyways, I was wondering how much play should there be while it is in gear? I can move the shifter to the left but not right. My friend installed shifter bushings on his STS and said it made it feel firmer. I also tried tightening the bolt that connects the shifter to the rods but then it becomes way to stiff. Any suggestions?

BTW, i got an STS that was made for an SE-R but upon closer inspection the sentra and my stock shifter were identical.

What shifter did you get? I'm pretty sure the Sentra and Maxima shifter for 2000 are identical like you said, so the STS is universal for both cars.

Its the ebay one you can get for like $20. Iunno if this is like a "you get what you pay for" thing but my friend got the same one and his feels great (for a sentra though).

wait, so did yours become firmer too? And if it did, why don't you like it? I guess it should be firmer a little

I think when I installed my STS, it was STIFF, but either I eventually got used to it or it had loosened up a bit.

how much slop is there in your shifter? is there a lot? negligible? I took a ride in my max, and noticed that in gear, the shifter moves to the left more than the right, but it seems normal to me. just because it moves one way or the other doesnt mean a bad install or part.

if it seems like there is WAY too much slack or movement, then maybe you do need to go through the install procedures again.

when i put mine in, it was super stiff, and the nuts kept falling off, that was bad to say the least, but now its still so stiff, it really takes some muskles to move it, i like it that way tho. im just glad the nuts stopped falling off, anyone experience that?

I just bought a locking washer over at home depot today and plan on installing it tommorow. My friend said that some of his friends who had installed STS also had thier "nuts" unscrewing. So, imma use locktite and the washer. But yeah, I think if you over tighten the bolt it becomes even harder to shift.

since I purchased mine OEM, it came with everything I needed with it. I dunno if you just got the stick and some hardware or what. as far as I know, mine did come with bushings which were thicker than the factory ones.

what did you receive when you got your shifter?

mine were the two bolts that hold the shifter in place, they just wiggled loose, oh good times on the side of the road working around a hot cat. i just got new ones witht the little plastic insert, they havetn fallin off ever since, i was hessatint to put locktight on them, theyre in too hard of a spot to be able to get any real force to loosen them, if i ever need ot again. i have the pace setter adjustable, its set in the middle setting, i plan on making it lower/shorter when i get the chance.

dayamngeena is my aim.

as far as the hardware, use a locknut with your bolt. a locknut is basically what coldsho desctibed, a nut with the hylon coating inside the threads to prevent the nut from turning.

where's the screws on the STS? can you see it on the driver seat? or do you have to open anything up? if it's right there you can see, put a piece of paper tower between the screw hole and screw...not sure if it works..just my idea....

Actually the screw i was talking about is the one that connects the bottom of the shifter to the shift rod. I checked it out this morning and it was loose. I tightened it and now it feels really stiff with little play going to the left.

Gizmmo, your M3 is one that I have seen many times. I heard that thing kills! What is it running; 260 whp now?
