MAF problems

If the MAF is bad will this make the engine sounds like a leak on the exhaust? In my car the exhaust is fine lo leaks but the engine sound is too loud when I accelerate no matter how fast or slow I drive.

shouldnt sound like anything. either the maf is on its way out which can cause stumbling and poor wide open performance or its completely bad and the car will not rev past 2.5k rpms or so.

do you have any exhaust mods? i had a y pipe on for a while then it started to develop a hissing noise so i header wrapped the flex and it helped a little. when my headers went on, i found the precat that the cattman y pipe did not take off was leaking. the heat shield around it was completely black.

the MAF for a 5'th gen is about 500 beans. I replaced one on my old infiniti, and now one on my 00 max that i bought last month. MAFs are a known problem as are the coil packs and the cylinder #1 spark plug well gasket. (hope you never need to know what it is). but i assure you it's a good whip......

the mafs for 2k2-k3 are more expensive but if you paid 500 for a 2k-k1, then you got ripped big time. i paid $85 for the maf sensor and tube brand new from jerry rome nissan. it took about 10 minutes to install the new maf. ive ordered from dave b before and hes got great prices and quick shipping as well. his number is 888-254-6060, ask for dave burnette.

I am having the same problem too. I have a 2k Auto w/ no mods and it sounds like there is no pipes running back from the motor. But only @ low idles. As soon as it goes over 2grand it sound normal.
It's at it's worst around 1500 rpm's

Have you found your problem or gotten any advise?

I got the same thing. THere is no leakage, its just the way the 2k sounds when you give low rpm.

I took it to the mechanic over this issue, he said it was fine, I should not pay any attention.

guys...this is not the MAF making the noise. This is a leak somewhere in the exhaust - could be the gaskets between headers/ypipe/cat/catbak/muffler - anywhere. Bad MAF causes poor engine performance, but not loud noise.....

btw - you can get MAF assembly for 2k-2k1 for around $100 at any dealer. Here is the part:

also, make sure the tubing on your intake/airbox is securely tightened everywhere....if it's not tight to the throttle body, etc., you could be getting noise as well as poor engine performance (intake air leak)

i really wouldnt rule out an exhaust leak. i had a hissing noise before my y pipe then it seemed to go away. then it came back, i wrapped the flex, checked as good as i could for leaks and nothing. then when the headers went on, we pulled the precat that the y pipe did not eliminate and the heatshield around it was completely black. precat was leaking letting all the buildup on the heatshield and causing the hissing.
