Horsepower on 20th A.E.

Why did the AE have 5 more HP?

I think it's because there is a different exhaust system on it than the non anniversary. Could be wrong but I remember hearing that somewhere.

I read / heard the same thing, but I am somewhat skeptical. A claim of a 5 horse increase is easy to make and hard to disprove.

It may be 5hp more at the crank, but I've read somewhere that the AE makes only 3whp more and that if anything, it's slower than the non-AE.

It's those darn 17" wheels which slow the car down...the normal SE and GLE come with 5 spoke 16" wheels...they are less heavy and so the car accelerates faster too

it's definitely a working of the piping...the I30t and AE have the same pipes...the regular SE's don't

Only early '00 SE came with 5-spoke 16". All '01 SEs have 17". My question is, are the 17" going to slow me down significantly because right now I have the 16" and am considering swapping them for the 17".

You, Irish, you....

But I stand corrected, it's not only early 00 that comes with 16". All 00-01 SEs without sunroof come with 16". And yes, I just did some research and they confirmed too that 17" are not going to slow me down much in my traffic light wroom wroom racer-wannabe efforts.

Actually Josh I like the 5-spoke design better, but I'm fond of the 5 spoke 17" that come on 3.5SE Altimas. I like mine, only problem being the 16"

So do they really slow you down? Let me know since I'm considering getting them.

Here's the charts with the dynos from the Gen 3-5, all wheel sizes

if you want to read the whole article it right here
https://maxima.org/modules.php?name=30_comparisons

Definitely like the look and handling of the 17's but I was surprised when I read this article...

the stock 17's are only 7 inches wide, it doesn't really offer much more in terms of handling. I'd rather upgrade to lighter 18x8.5's or at least aftermarket 17x7.5's

and just look at the charts. a 5th gen with stock 17's (purple) will get owned by all the other cars listed. Look at the differences in hp & tq

^^And that has anything to do with this thread how?

I think the date of production for 17" rims was 05/00 or 06/00. Models built after that date received 17" rims/tires with the Comfort and Convenient package. 16" 5spokes became OEM spec on GLE's built after 12/99.

But yes, the SE AE has different ECU and B-pipe part number.

How did my GLE then come with 5 spokers when it was built before 12/99? I asked my dad but he doesn't remember ordering them separately...go figure.

What is the weight of the 16 inch 5 spoke w/ Tires on the 2k Max? I'm thinking about getting 18' but I'm having second toughts now. Is there any 18' or 17' that is equal or weighs less than the 16' stock?

There should be plenty of aftermarket rims out there that are both bigger and lighter than stock, just do some research.

yep, there are plenty of aftermarket lightweight 18's. There are a little expensive, but well worth it IMO. I'm saving up for some 18x8.5's at only 16 lbs a piece (w/out tire)

All I know is my 17x7 6-spoke SE wheels are some heavy motherf**kers. I've never driven my car with any other wheels, so I can't really compare...

Regardless of all the expensive brake swaps/repairs/mods/etc. I've had to do, I still love the damn thing

ouch. that's a mighty bill to foot. but it'll fly afterwards
my second biggest mistake with this car was to get heavy rims (they look too d@mn good)

[first mistake was not looking harder for a 5 spd, and settling for an auto...damn me for that]

car handles like a champ now (compared to its old self anyway), if a lot harsher. but it gives me a sport of dodging the good old jersey potholes
