Want to get a code puller

Anyone know the exactly what I need if I want one of those code pulling devices (sorry I dont know the technical term for it?) for a 2000 Max? I've seen consult and obd II used several places but not sure exactly what I would need.
Thanks

One thing you need is the description on the codes for your particular car if it doesn't already come with it. I bought my OB2 brand new at Pep Boys for $100.00 and it came with CD software for all OB2 compliant vehicles with code descriptions. The only thing, the cheaper OB2 scanners can only read "P0" codes. The more expensive scanners can read the "P1" codes which are found normally on the newer vehicles today. This is where you would have to take a trip to the dealer if you cannot pull a P1 code.
