urgent question about a 2000 maxima!!! please help!!!

hey, i am planning to get a used 2000 maxima

and tomorrow is the deal day--i would like to

hear you guys' opinion before making the

final decision:

its model is gxe( the lowest among the 3 models), 1st owner, and it has got 75k on

that. what's tricky is that on the very

morning i checked the car, according to the

owner, the check engine light went on for the

first time. then he took the car to nissan

dealer from whom he bought it new. the next

morning he told me that it was because of bad

ignition coil and since they could not figure

out which one went wrong, he spent $600 to

replace all 6 of them. he also gave me the

number of the guy who is doing to change in

the garage.

i called the guy and asked whether the coils

will go bad in the future and he told me that

it will probably last me for a couple of

years without causing any problem. besides,

he told me that the owner took very good care

of the car and besides the 6 replaced parts,

the car was in excellent condition.

then i tried a google on line to see what

happens after the replacement of the 6 coils

and did not find a lot of info on "what

happens AFTER the coils replacement"--is

there anybody who had their maxima 6 ignition

coils replaced? could you give me some idea

about how long, normally, will they last me a

long time? or, should i get it if nothing

else has problem?

since i will give the owner answer tomorrow

morning, therefore any input would be very

very very appreciated!!!

I got my coils off Ebay for 180 bux shipped- brand new in the box, takes about 20 min to change at most. Make sure to get a new MAF sensor as they like to crap out with higher mileage like the car your looking. I repleaced my coils cause my dyno chart was off by 10WHP, and I thought it might be the coils, but it was my MAF which took a dump 2 weeks later- and after repleacing it and re-dynoing I had my 10WHP back, plus a few more even

No problem.....

Once the coils are replaced it should be no problem. If it makes you feel better bring a allen key set with you when you go to buy the car . There are four allen screws on the top of the motor remove them and you will be able to see the front three coils as long as they have the grey dot on them you should be fine.

Look at it this way... the original ones lasted the guy 75k miles. How long is it going to take you to get to 75k miles? That should give you an idea

DUde, just buy the car.. coils are no big deal. Basically, it falls under maintenance catagory. Also.. check to see if he changed the belts and stuff.. at 75k I HOPE he did the belt or else it might snap on ya.

thks for the replies--as for the belts, i think nissan cars are using some timing chains which needs to be replaced when over 105000~~therefore, wha exactly do u mean by the belt and stuff? thk again!

There's also a fan belt which i changed @ 60k. cost ~ $30

make sure the owner had a 60k service done. Ask, what was done. Should give you a better assesment on how well he took care of it, rather than asking his mechanic buddy.

As for the coils, mine went bad around 65k. Changed all 6 for $310 (deal).
shouldn't be a problem in the future. That will not be an issue again.

i would also get a carfax aswell. Ask somone on the forum.

the owner keeps a big pile of the service records--i think the 60 k is also included~~so it seems that the power steering belt and alternator blet plus the fan belt totally do not cost me an arm and a leg then~~

u did get a BIG deal on that! did u change them urself?

that'll be great--this is what i like to hear~~

i have got the carfax and everything looks good~~

well, hope i can have good luck

if the owner kept a stack of service records, it usually means that the person is pretty meticulous about keeping care of the car... sounds to me like you're buying a good car that was well taken care of... welcome to the family...

this is kinda funny, you're in almost exactly the same situation I am. I am buying a 2000 gxe (from my father's friend), 92k miles on it but just had the coils replaced.

if you haven't bought the car already... "DO IT, DO IT, DO IT!" This is my first max but I'm loving it so far. ...dang, now I want to go for a drive!

congradulations on your new maxima! Want to be in my "proud new owner of a 2000 maxima gxe with relatively high miles and just-been-in-the-shop to replace the coils" club?
