5.5 Gen Short Throw Shifter lead - NEED YOUR HELP
sts
can one of you guys look on the side of your shifter housing and pull a part # so that i can order the correct shifter housing and cable for your 5.5 gen cars. Either I'm gonna build your STS or if you read below, I don't have to.
Back in the thread there are some pics that Fezzik posted of the 2005 Altima se-r Shifter Housing. This unit by itself is not a short shifter. But, if you remove the reverse lockout mechanism, you can use:
http://www.hpautoworks.com/nimoshshnisp.html
Fezzik mentioned that it moved the shifter forward. By using the STS as offered by hpautoworks the shifter pattern is moved back therefore canceling each other out. You might consider using a 2004 Altima shifter housing without the reverse lockout. Less expensive and it doesn't have the two screw towers behind the shifter. You need to check the diameter of the post where the cable bolts to the shifter arm on your maxima shifter. If it is 8mm, you can make the swap without also buying a cable and your good to go.
contact andy at hpautoworks to work out the details. I'm only looking at this from what I see on the forum and what has been done with the Altima and Sentra shifters. Fezzik proved that it will bolt in.

45% reduction in throw
The Shifter Housings above are for the Altima and for the Sentra. Thee Altima, Sentra and Maxima have the same floor bolt pattern. Fezzik installed an Altima Shifter Housing in his Maxima.
You could install a 2004 Sentra Shift Housing and use it's Reverse Spring Detent instead of your Reverse Lockout and one of the short shifter kits shown in the pics above. You'll get a 45% reduction in throw.

They're not just making 30 STS kits. The initial run of 30 is complete with more on the way. Everyone who wants one will be able to order one. They're not even screwing around with the shifter in the car. This piece installs under the hood so no messing with the reverse lockout.
I don't think anyone is discouraging the developement of another design. It does look like the race has been won for now though.

no one even has one yet, and there is already controversey? chill guys.
For one, i'd recommend to people who dont get on the first ship to atleast wait until the first shipment gets theirs, since there would be a delay anyhow. And i have one minor review from phxblue driving down the street. Let everyone express how they like it you know.
Also, there is nothing but good things to come if others want to make other STS 's , or hpautoworks ever decides to even make improvements or other products for us as well, as far as im concerned the window is now open, and we finally got a guy taking us seriously.
I have to really thank the guys who started this intitiative, but ina few weeks i will be able to even say if i'm happy with it myself ; ).
I'm very optimistic of course heh.

They;ve recently come out with a couple of sts for our 2k2 & 2k3 six speeds. Stillen now has a sh*tty one piece unit that bolts to the actual shifter. TVM (I think I got the name right) has a one piece unit that goes on the shift cable linkage under the hood. Go to e-bay under maxima parts and accessories, and there is a short throw shifter for $150 (or look up watkinsco on google) I picked one up a couple of weeks ago. It has TWO new parts to install (1) one attaches to the actual shifter that relocates the cable and (2) one piece that attaches to the shift cable linkage under the factory airbox. The kit just changes the pivot points where everything connects. Really helps make a nice tight gate for the shift pattern, it tightened everything up.Took me twenty minutes before I was slamming gears for the next hour. I sprayed down all the moving parts with silicone spray and the thing shifts like butter. Supposedly this shifter is going to be sold to both Stillen and nissan dealerships around the country. I don't know if that fact is true or not, but thats what the man said. Either way, I could give a sh*t, the shift kit is real nice. Shortens up the throws roughly 35%. First to second gear is a little shorter than usual (anything is better than shift throw length of the stock six-speed which felt the same as my old Isuzu Rodeo), but second to third is real short making both my upshifts and downshifts a lot quicker. Still getting used to the shorter throws. I've been waiting since day one for a sts for my maxima, now it drives like it should. Try one of these bad boys out, I don't think anyone will be disappointed. I may be a Neewbie to this forum, but I've been modding all my cars for fifteen years. Trust me on this one, and to boot, it is cheaper than the crappy stillen piece.
hey mak...i got the twm. i posted before about it. it is a quality piece. if you are in salty areas like most of the NE, the pivot rod starts to corode...not any different than the rest of Nissan's metal under the hood! that is my only complaint...not really a complaint if you look at the rest of the stuff under the hood. it is simple to install and seems durable too. i have one thing everyone should be aware of no matter which one you buy...there is a retainer clip that holds the cable in place inboard of the gear selector that can come loose and will cause the selector not to engage the gear...your shifter in the car will go from 1-3-5 without hitting anything. its like the "H" pattern is gone on the top end. STOP immediately if this happens. I found the clip just resting in a little nook on the motor/tranny. Thank god I found it and was able to bend it to keep it in place. The clip is like a tension clip and is a cheap pc. it looks like a "u" with bends in the verticle legs. maybe a good idea to keep an extra in the glove box. i have one now.
