I just bought a 2000 maxima se. It has 55,000 miles on it. should I get the extended warranty(3 yrs). I did not think I would need it, but now I am having second thoughts. help me deciede. Paul

No dont buy it; consumer reports recommends never getting the extended warrent for vechicles that are highly rated. Save the money there shouldnt be that many problems

I disagree. I paid about $1000 to get the Nissan Gold extended warranty for my 2000 SE that had 35K on it when I bought it about a year ago. The warranty covers 4 yrs/100,000 miles bumper to bumper (with a few exceptions -regular wear items like clutch plate, brake pads, etc...)

anyhow, so far I've used it three times:
1. had front strut replaced
2. had bent rim diagnosed when i though something else was the problem (would have had to pay like $60 diagnosis fee otherwise)
3. had clutch master cylinder replaced when it leaked all over my driver's floormat. when they did that, they also gave me a FULL SET of 2k3 maxima floormats that matched my interior.

so...in about a year, by my estimate my warranty has covered maybe $400-$500+ in stuff I would have had to pay for myself otherwise. Dealer did not try to get out of the work or claim it wasn't warranty issue....just took care of my problems and I paid nothing..

so just assuming I spend the same amount for the next 3 years on warranty-covered work, I paid $1000 for around $2000 worth of work...

seems like a good deal to me, and happy I did it.

btw - in 3 visits the dealer has never once even mentioned mods on the car - which I know they saw when they opened the hood and put the car on the lift...

i think its worth getting the extended warranty.. saves alot of head aches...
for example.
i lost my tranny at 44K .. if i did not have extended warranty i had to pay 2500 to get a new one.
but i got a new one under warranty at no charge or deductibles..

Very worth getting the extended warranty. I just got one that ran me $1200 5yrs/100k. But unlike Irish's, my warranty covers absolutely everything on the car -- including wear and tear stuff. I'm taking it in within a few days to get the ignition coil replaced and change all of the spark plugs -- car doesn't start right sometimes.

I agree also that is worth it. I had the Nissan Security Gold on my last Nissan and it payed for itself many times over. Its around the fifth year of ownership that I've noticed stuff going wrong with cars..Not all cars though...But I replaced a starter,flywheel,alternater, crank angle sensor, knock sensor and a fuel pump..This was on a Twin Turbo Z, so you just imagine how much parts and labor would have been if I had to pay for that crap out of my pocket..The point is, if you plan to keep the car for a while then your better off just getting it. I don't know about the dealership by you, but mine gets 81 flat rate per hour, which is sick. I remeber when it was like 60 per hour back in the day...Ohhh the daysss....LOL

Thanks for the input. It's not a nissan dealer so I guess I need to find out more on the warranty. where I have to take it for work and all thats covered. sounds like I should get it.

Where are you guys getting these prices?

My car goes out of warranty in less than 2500 miles, and my dealer told me he can only sell me the extended warranty while the car still has factory warranty. But his rpice is $1700 w/ $50 deductible or $1750 w/ $0 deductible.

Where can I get it for $1200?

they will be able to help you with all the questions and i think you can purchase warranties too.. not sure

the warranties are all different. You can adjust both the mileage and years on them which will affect the cost. I got mine when I bought the car used at Browns Sterling Nissan....I chose the 4-year, 100,000 warranty, even though they wanted to sell me the 6-year, 100,000 for more. I figured I'd be over 100,000 in 3-4 years, so why pay for an extra 2 years, right?

Nissan warranty is just like anything else at a dealer. It's negotiable - no matter what your dealer says, trust me, it is....

Just be careful, the dealer's in my area are a pain to deal with they don't want to do work! I cancelled the warranty due to the fact that they kept jerking me around.

I went with a 3rd party warranty service. Seems good and reputable. You can call Warranty Direct at 800-621-2783 x1418 and speak to Frank. He's such a cool dude to deal with and he'll explain everything. Tell him that Andrew Ng sent ya and he'll take care of you. When I first spoke to him, I had doubts. I even called several times to inquire about certain things before I went with the warranty. He'll answer every question that comes along. Something went wrong on my car and I called him to help out. Just be very careful. I bought an extended warranty from a 3rd party company. Then when I needed it, the problem (bad coils) was not covered. Only then did I find out that this particular company does not cover ANYTHING that Nissan has issued a TSB on (which in case you haven't looked lately is just about EVERYTHING on the Max).

Judging by the comments posted here, sounds like you will be better off going w/a Nissan Extended Warranty.

OK, so what do you do if you are purchasing a Maxima at a non-nissan dealership (in my case, Infiniti)? Is there no way to get the Nissan extended warranty if I purchase it there?

Call Nissan at the 1-800 # mentioned above. They can give you info on warranties and probably sell you one.
