Strange Automatic Shifting for 2000 GLE

when I press the gass pedal all the way to the floor the max accelerates beautifully upto about 4500 RPM. Then after 4500 RPM it feels like the car starts to hesitate and sputter. The RPMs will contiue to increase but there is no power going to the wheels. Then it will shift really harshly into second gear.

If i keep the RPMs below 4500 then the car drives beautifully.

I also drove another 2000 max automatc and it did the exact same thing. This is a common problem for this car? How can I fix this?

I took the car to a transmission shop and the mechanic said that the tranny is fine. He said it felt like the motor was starving for gas when the issue occurs. He suggested that a fuel filter may be causing the problem but I have heard this car does not have a fuel filter...?

Please help!

Thanks

Thanks for the info, i am really new to this mechanical side of maximas (love to drive them though, i have had three).

Waht is the MAF? What is the best way to get it checked out?
Same with Coil Packs? What are they and how to verify they are in good working order.

Thanks!

I think it is your MAF. That is your Mass Air Flow Sensor which is located right behind your airbox and in between that and your throttle body. You should take it to the dealer and have it checked. If it's that, then they will give you the updated one at for under $150. GL!

MAF - mass air flow sesnor.

function - measuring amount of air entering the intake manifold. It also control fuel injector duty cycle and fuel flow.

best way to get it checked - DIY, you can measure the MAF voltage with a multimeter. or take to a shop that has an advance OBD-II diagnostic scanner to get MAF readings for you when you take the car above 4500.

oil pack - do you hear pinging or knocking when you take your car above 4500? do you have any blinking check engine light? (aka service engine soon light)

Thanks for the info! I will get the MAF checked out and let you know what I learn.

Also, there are no lights on (check engine, etc) and there are really no funny noises to speak of...

Thanks again!

Just called the local nissan dealer for a MAF diagnostic and quote for parts/labor install. Diagnostic is $80 bucks and he quoted me $613 bucks for the replacement part (including labor)! He claimed that the MAF itself is $488...wow! Any one know a way to get that part for less?

Thanks!
