Had to replace an axle

I've had the transaxle seal go bad twice on me. The seal from the driveshaft to the transaxle. Had the dealer replace it under warranty those two times, but it started leaking again so I brought it to a family friend who is a mechanic. He said the left axle was bad and needed to be replaced. I never have launched my car nor been to the track. The car has never seen winter and I don't recall ever going offroading or hitting any large potholes or bumps. Has anyone else ever had to replace an axle? What could cause it to go bad?

A rear axle (for an 01) was roughly $460. A girl run a red light and busted me in the rear passenger tire and bent the axle. Couldn't tell until about 10k miles later and the tire was wore out.

Possible the axle was grooved/pitted, or at the transaxle housing where the axle seal sits. If the original seal leaked and dirt got in there it could have caused enough damage. I don't see too many complaints (on this forum) of leaking axle seals even amongst the heaviest modders.
