CEL - Catalytic Converter Failure

I need some advise quick. I have a CEL that has been diagnosed as a catalytic converter failure. I really do not want to shell out the $800 clam to fix if the car will run ok in this mode. Is there any way that I can permanently turn off this CEL so I don’t have to look at it all the time? What is the down side of not fixing the cat? Is this a common problem with this car?

Emissions Warranty

If your vehicle has less than 80k, it is covered under the emissions portion of the warranty. I forgot the time limitation, not sure what that part is. I typically reach mileage b4 time.

Thaks for the reply. It was darn close to 80K when this was first diagnosed. I now have about 86k. Is there some way to fight this?

Instead of the dealer, try going to Midus Muffler for a new cat. It should be considerably less expensive & I believe that they will guarantee the cat for the life of the car (as long as you own it).

Hey...Thank for the idea. Color me dumb for not thinking of that myself. Since the dealer diagnosed the issue I never even though about going any place else to get the work done.

Just went through this...>

I've had the bad catalytic converter code for over a year. So I finally start trying to get rid of it. It turned out to be a bad o2 sensor. The one right behind the radiator...it's blue wired. I replaced my cat, reflashed the computer, reinstalled my factory y-pipe and replaced all the O2s in the y-pipe. Nothing worked.

It was the stupid blue wired 02 sensor.

By the way I had over 90k miles so Nissan covering this was not an option.

Good luck.

Jeff,
Thanks for your input. I am not sure you made me fell any better though. My fear is that we will spend the $800 to fix what they think is wrong only to find out that is not it. The have previously replaced 2 ox sensor in my car. The bummer here is that I am trying to sell the car, which I have loved dearly, and am doing the repair in order to be able to sell it. By the way I have just bought a Cadillac CTS-V. It has a 400hp LS6 Corvett engine and a 6sp trany. Boy does this baby go!
