2000 maxima se prob help!

Just bought a 2000 max se has 42k. Had it for about a month, drove great. Then i got a serive engine soon light come up about a week ago. As i hit the gas i could hear a low rattling/clammering noise under the hood, like beans in a can almost. Now today its real loud and the car hesitates a bit as i accelerate.. Any ideas what it might be? He claims he put new senosrs and coils in the car. Should i call him and bother him, or "sold as is"

yikes, you scare me man! I just got a 2000 max one month ago too which supposedly had coil(s) replaced! I'm new, but that sounds like coils to me too, good luck.

just got back from the shop. computer read o2 sensor. mechanic said the beading sound was a lean condition. That i should call nissan and find out what the warrenty is on them. I called nissan and the warrenty is 3yr/35k im at 42k. So i asked how much and for the sensor he said 130 but he needs to know what 02 sensor and bank. If i go to autozone can i find out which sensor i need and the bank and replace this sucker myself??

02 Sensors are difficult to replace since they are all in the exuast.
Check parts.com for cheapest OEM sensors, I got all 4 replaced on my max.

i called the dealer and he says thats not enough info, he me to come down to run a test to see which sensor 1 or 2. Is there any way to find out on my own?

You've got yourself a Cali spec (like me). We have 4 O2 sensors. Code 420 is o2 sensor/bank 2. I have the same thing, except...I think something's also wrong with your engine. Mine doesn't rattle or hesitate when I push it. It drives incredibly well with the SES on. A rattle in your engine might be engine knock.

the rattle was told to me as a problem from the sensor causing a lean conditon. the car doesnt shake or rattle, its sounds like beans in a can.

Search for the TSB on erroneous P0420 codes, fix is a ECU reflash and/or new O2 sensors?

this is the deal with 420 the rattling you hear has nothing to do with the code its the car running to rich and the car doesn't like that...i've changed only 91 plus gas and i haven't heard the sound ever since...there really isn't much you can do about it. now with 420 mine ended up being both the sensor and a bad maf the sensor thats screwing up is the one thats attatched to the redwire from the front of your engine...follow that and you'll find your sensor.

I also Had a rattle due to a Airflow sensor not working. When that went out, my car had the same "beans in can" noise until the day It was fixed. It would do it, when in low RPMs . Not a deadly problem but sounds intimidating. my code was p1710. Sound is due to engine missfire, and/or running to rich or lean. Replace 02 sensor. if sounds stops, problem is fixed. then reset the ECU. Either at Autozone, or unplug battery for a night so it can reset. Then if SES light remains off. problem is 100% fixed. if it comes back on, check Throttle body for dirt build-up. Good Luck!

hmmm....isn't this just regular old "engine knocking"? Caused by using lower-octane gas generally.....also influenced by environmental factors (humidity, temperature, etc...)

O2 sensors will trip the check engine light over and over again in Maximas. in 2000 and 2001 maximas there are three ( California I have no idea what they did to those). There is one on each of the exhaust manafold and one on the cat. I searched all over at local shops to replace. The only place I found cheaper than the dealer was www.everythingnissan.com. If you feel comfortable replacing them on your own this is your best bet. Find somone to reset the computer and you are good. Cheap gas does cause a knocking fast with these cars. Mid grade does seem to agree with mine but every engine is different. Dont skimp and the car will perform. I am at 100K on a 2000 and never left me dissapointed.
