Stock alarm question

I was just wondering how the maxima stock alarm works and how sensative it is. What will make it go off? Was wondering if an aftermarket alarm system is any good. The reason I ask all of this is I am a college student, so I don't like the fact that I have to keep the car in a dark parking lot all the time.

it'll go off when it's on and someone's trying to open the locks. Never had it go off for any other reason.

The only way it'll go off is if you open something, whether doors, trunk, or hood. It has no shock sensors. Good thing is that it has a starter killswitch so you can't start the car unless the alarm is disarmed.
