I have been using the K&N filter for more than two years now. I cleaned it every 30K miles.. I have 84K miles in my 01, so do the numbers... better than buying the paper crap at Walmart... so in my opinion.. the K&N first saves you money and gives better "little" gas mileage.... good luck with your Berk...

If you are going to keep your stock intake, then buy the k & n. If not, save the money and get the wai. I made the mistake by buying a kn filter and used it for only 2 months before buying the injen, which is another mistake.

Iam still educating myself about cars as a enthusiast..
(1). Do K/N Filters or something like that -- add a few miles to my MPG on my 01 Maxima GLE?
(2). If so, apart from my MPG Gains.. What would i see a difference in?
(3). Best Place to buy this stuff??

As long as the seal on your air intake is good

As long as the K&N makes a good seal around the air filter holder then you should be fine. I was running w/ a Fram and just bought a Nissan air filter. I pulled the Fram out and it barely made a decent seal. The Nissan one fits like tupperware around the air filter housing.

I blew my MAF from the Fram I think, so I just replaced it (the MAF), and am keeping the stock air filter just to keep my MAF safe.

The Fram sux large donkey dong...

I had a K&N on my Cherokee. I've read that they let more fine grit through, so I switched to an Amsoil foam/oil filter. It was ok, but messy. I've since switched to Amsoil's new EA synthitic filter, and so far like the results (highly subjective of course) but it is a lot cleaner.

They've also started to make the EA's in the cone style too.

i had one about 5 k miles, really no performance diff, maybe sounds a bit diff, but i washed all the oil off mine, not to blow my 3rd MAF! downside is that u can clearly see it lets a whole lot more dirt in, the paper pretty much gets all dirt!!! which is a great thing, i just may go back to paper.

I've always put K&N filters in my cars.....but I'm not putting one in the '01 Max I just picked up. I don't want any MAF issues, and it seems the jury is still out on whether or not the filter contributes to MAF problems.

I just recently took out my panel K&n filter to clean it. With everyone talking about that the oil might mess up the MAF, I was wondering if it's ok If I just install back in my car without re-oiling it?

the oil is what traps the dirt.
we have had this argument before. oil will not mess up a MAF. OVER oiling COULD mess up the MAF

I have read up on K&Ns and other air filters. K&N had the most flow BUT allowed more dirt through. The amount of dirt let in if I remember correctly was on a very small scale but in comparison to others the K&N was the absolute worst.

4hps is not worth the possible MAF issue or the relative cleanliness of your intake air. My .02.

i tottaly agree!!! guys with the KNs you can look at the little screen on the maf, now take your finger and brush across it, ull see just how much dirt gets into your intake and engine with a KN. u can even put it up to a light and see the holes in the mesh. and oil WILL mess up the maf. so a for a few horsies its really not woth it. i just went back to stock, only difference is in the noise, thats it!

the oil MIGHT mess up your MAF if its OVER OILED. this has been discussed before and there is NO proof that the K&N will mess up your MAF.

as far as the filter not working...

Anyone know the model # of the K&N CONE filter which would be appropriate for a 3" intake, aka those filters that usually come with aftermarket kits on ebay that would fit a 2000 maxima

ok, maybe not ervyone who uses a KN had maf issues but its so damn often u hear someone put in a KN and next week or month the maf goes (out of no where). the way it comes from factory already looks overoiled, any less looks pointless cause it will not trap the dirt anyway, and without iol it lets in waaaay too much dirt.

i like KN filters and perfer them to anything else, but this corralation to bad mafs just isnt worth it anymore.

was this independent tests or KN tests? seems like lots of info they give is biased, and like i said i like the KN filters, abut im on my 3rd MAF and dont want to got for 4.

I went through three MAF on paper filters, put in my K&N nearly 3 1/2 years ago when I had the last one changed... Still on it with no sign of it going bad (knock on wood).

Thats one panel filter and now on the Berk Intake cone filter.

Something to think about: you hear all these issues because it is only the people who have the issues who will start a (reposted) thread. Hardly anyone will use a K&N for 1000 miles and post a thread saying "Installed K&N and MAF Hasn't Blown Yet". I'm sure there are just as many people out there, if not more, who have K&Ns and have had no issues.

In fact, I've had 3 different K&N filters straight out of the box for a combined 50k+ miles now with no issues whatsoever. I even have the "weaker" 2002 MAF that the car came with from the factory.

Don't you clean and reuse the filters? Aside from the "high flow" characteristics of the filter's design I though reusability was a major reason for forking over the money.

Yes, ideally I'd have reused em, but the Nissan techs threw my first panel filter out during my 30k maintenence. Then while investigating some power loss and hesitation issues (which were found to be non-MAF related) about 5k miles ago, I swapped in a new cone filter just to compare and have been too lazy/busy to clean the old one and swap it back out.

I had put a K&N filter in my 94 max and my 99 max. Never had any problems with it, however I can't really say that I saw all that much performance gain. I also didn't see an major differences in gas milage, so I suppose the only plus I really did see was not having to have to change the thing every 3k or 4k miles. I now have an 02 max with a stock air filter. Seems to be fine to me.

Interesting study... well, it seems to show that the actual oil is not responsible for any failures. K&N claims that a lof of the failed sensors which were sent to them by dealers, in fact, hadn't failed. I'm not sure what to make of this... are dealerships misdiagnosing bad MAFs? The article doesn't specify what dealerships have sent them MAFs - or even which auto manufacturer they belong to.. could still be that Maxima MAFS are different, who knows.

I like to hear that K&N is taking these accusations seriously though.
