I feel Nissan has done a disservice to me with the introduction of the Altima
Has this ever happened in the history of carmakers that a car that has been a lesser car than the flagship car, all of a sudden is better in nearly every aspect, or at least appears to be? Now I realize that Maxima will rebound from this, but for now, Altima is the shiiittzzz.
I would have waited last month when I purchased this 2001 and got either an Altima or held out for the next Maxima. No wonder they sold it to me for invoice. Bye-bye resale value!

I'm sure that one year overlap will have us Maxima lovers and potential Altima or Maxima buyers scratching their heads about which of the two to buy. But once the 6th generation Maxima comes out, Nissan's sedan product line will be more defined for everyone and all will be good again.
Honestly, you should have been on this board 1 month, 2 months, 3 months ago, you would have known about the new Altima. Just like we know what is going on with the new Maxima(s) (2002-3 (Big-Z) and 2004 (complete redisign))
Your shouldn't blame Nissan, Caveat Emptor.
Your shouldn't blame Nissan, Caveat Emptor.
I agree with the replies...
If Nissan makes lineup decisions that will eventually enhance its image in the US and increase sales, then we all will benefit. Besides, this just means we might not have the best for a year but the Altima's going to have to go through heavy scrutiny being a new car and everything so who knows how well it will fare. I'm personally looking to move up into the larger Max in 10 years and seeing some good head-on competition against the Camry and Accord by the Altima.
prices?
You all have to remember that the prices for the new Altima have not been announced yet. Nissan's aiming for the "younger, affluent" market, so prices will most likely be close but slightly lower than the current generation Maxima's (i.e. closer competition w/ the Accords and Camrys). The strategy is clear: align Nissan's new products head-to-head to the competion-(Sentra/Civic/Corolla) and (Altima/Accord/Camry)
Unfortunately, the new Max's will probably be out of reach of most potential buyers...

Patience is a virtue! By the time the 2003/04 Maxima comes out you would have gained enough equity to trade for it. So be patient, good things will follow. Do you actually think that they will let the Altima out do the Maxima? The new Max is rumored to be about 260hsp 3.5ltrs. You'll never know, they may decide to make it awd as well. Remeber something better will always come along, just be satisfied and make the best of what you have!

They are getting the job done.

yeah, youre all fine with it now...
but wait til you want to trade. I'm not going to fling myself off a cliff, but this is probably the last nail in the coffin of my Nissan loyalty. They probably just took $2500 out of my pocket.
Sure its happened before.. its all business. yay for nissan, whatever... All I know is the new Altima doesnt help me in any way shape or fashion.
On the other hand, the size of the car and HP doesnt mean much. The GP has more HP (and many sedans have 200+hp) and the MontyCarlo thing is bigger than a max but you dont see me lining up for one of those.
For the most part, I'm witholding my resentment until I see what really happens on the lot. Given what I've seen from Nissan, I dont think it will work in my favor.

well...
I think we ALL sell our cars eventually, so I'd be a fool not to care about resale.. ALSO, sometimes your car gets totalled by no fault of your own. You may get less money than you need to replace the car of its class because of poor resale. (you will get enough but its harder).
I dont think this requires a psychiatric evaluation because I'm not completely content. My expectations simply exceeded the ability of whatever painted my car, and the dealers ability to service the nagging problems that a clearly addressable through TSBs.

Dave
you guys are all whining and whining about the new model cars
hell im pissed too but take it like men-damn
how do you guys think the 4th gen people felt when the 5th gen arrived? better yet for the 2k owners...how do you think the AE owners feel?
AE owners bought a car thinking that it would be the pinnacle of the Maxima for a while...but now Nissan is slapping them upside the head with the SE-R
just do what you can with what you have
supercharge it or trade it in...do you think Nissan cares about how we feel? the SE-R is coming regardless

I have no complaints at all
I bought my Maxima because I wanted a car that was:
a) sports-oriented;
b) luxurious; and
c) reasonably-priced.
The Maxima met all of these qualifications. Other than the VW Passat (which I think is less attractive than the Maxima), everything else I looked at (BMW 330, Saab 9-3, Volvo S70, Audi A4) was more expensive and (generally) smaller and less luxurious.
As for the increased hp for the new engine, the impact on performance is apt to be negligible. BMW keeps increasing the displacement and nominal hp of its 3-series, without changing the overall performance of the cars. The resale value of the older 5th generations will be due almost solely to their older age, not lack of hp. You need to keep in mind that the member of this board are not typical of Maxima buyers – you will have to first remove all performance and handling mods prior to selling in order to increase the value to a dealership.
I would think the bigger concern with the members of this board is the future of the redesigned, larger Maxima coming out in the future. I suspect it will not have a manual transmission offered, a softer suspension, and be comparable to the Avalon. The new version may no longer be a “4-door sports car”, but simply a Buick-like Japanese sedan. The market for larger, more luxurious sports sedans will once again be limited to the Europeans.

Don't know how many of you caught this... but according to Nissan, the new 240hp altima can do 0-60 in 6.3 secs... and tops out at 142 mph..
How do I know?? It's on the nissan website!!!
where on the Nissan website???
I won't tell you... it's an easter egg hunt!!!... let's see who finds it first...

Waaaaaaaaaah Waaaaaaaaah
Let's see, in mid March I picked up my SE AE with everything but an automatic for 27+K. Looking at Nissan's web site, in comparison to my no longer feeling so new Maxima, the new Altima adds another speaker to the Bose system, makes the rear suspension fully independent, adds Xenon lights, gives the option of side curtain air bags (in lieu of the seat mounted), adds a trip computer, adds electronic brake assist, makes the car bigger, yet lighter, not to mention giving it more power in the engine bay, AND cleans up the awkward looking Nissan design themes. AND it will allegedly be priced to compete against V6 Accords?
Somebody please wake me up from my nightmare.....
Before I wake up, maybe the dream will turn around, and Nissan will send me a $5000 voucher toward my next purchase of a new Nissan product for being such a devoted customer...to offset the lost value of my Maxima.
Oops - reality: They'll blow the budget on $5000 rebates on all the '01 AND '02 Max's. (Who'd want to buy an '02 Max with the doudy styling, rear beam, etc. even with 20 more hp) when you can have a better all round performer in the Altima? I bet the Max goes on hiatus for '02... They won't be able to make any money selling a Japanese built 5th gen Max alongside the all new US built Altima.
Oh well, I bougt my car as a "ten year car". Now, I have no choice unless I like throwing away cash.
...just venting. I still like my car except for the missing fuel filler splash guard, the on/off surges when trying to coast in traffic, and soft paint... I sure wish Honda had gotten off their a-- and made one of their fine manual transmissions for the TL type S...
Waaa Waaa sob sob. Hurray for Nissan. Good to see the turn around is producing cars like the Altima and not a Le Altima.

Your post says it all-my 5th gen Max is everything I wanted in a car, & then some...definitely no regrets here...
just lots of fun behind the wheel...
I feel I bought the best car available at the time.
I am not upset with Nissan. This was a business deal and I didn't make them sign a contract guaranteeing resale.
I fail to see why it matters that they created a better vehicle. Ten years from now when I am looking for a new car I am sure whatever I buy will be 10x better than my current one.
Heck, one year from now when I replace my 10 year old Protege I bet I will find a better car for the same price as the Maxima.
Enjoy what you have.
