Code P0420-DTC P0420 (BANK 1), P0430 (BANK 2) THREE WAY CATALYST FUNCTION

Anyone can help me sort this out, i got this code P0420 at autozone , went to see what it means in service manual heres what it states:

On Board Diagnosis Logic
NFEC0214
The ECM monitors the switching frequency ratio of heated oxygen
sensors 1 (front) and 2 (rear).
A three way catalyst (Manifold) with high oxygen storage capacity
will indicate a low switching frequency of heated oxygen sensor 2
(rear). As oxygen storage capacity decreases, the heated oxygen
sensor 2 (rear) switching frequency will increase.
When the frequency ratio of heated oxygen sensor 1 (front) and 2
(rear) approaches a specified limit value, the three way catalyst
(Manifold) malfunction is diagnosed.
Malfunction is detected when three way catalyst (Manifold) does
not operate properly, three way catalyst does not have enough oxygen storage capacity.

Ok so does this mean the cat is malfunctioning or the o2 sensors?

I have that code too. It's an O2 sensor issue/high wattage.

Correct me if I'm wrong. Isn't the "true" problem with all these codes for the rear sensors because the ECU came from the factory with the limits on when to throw the code for the rear sensors set "too tight". That's why there is a TSB instructing the dealer to change the sensor and reprogram the ECU.

My understandings is that the rear sensors don't effect the performance of the car and are not used by the engine for anything (unlike the front o2 sensors which are critical to proper performance). The rears only watch if the pre-cats are working, nothing else. A waste of time and a source of unneeded aggrevation with all these codes, IMO.

was that for 2001 too? I know it was for 2000 but I'm not sure about 2001...

ok, so if there was a TSB issued for this problem, what exactly does that mean?
I have the same problem with my 2000.

The TSB for this problem states to replace both rear o2 sensors and reprogram the computer. It gives step by step instructions for the Nissan Service guy on how to do it. I don't have have copy but have seen it.

Some on this board have had the work covered at Nissan by the federal emmisons warrentee which is longer than the stardard 3yr/36K. So, I guess it would make sense to talk with the service advisor and see what they say, before trying to fix it yourself.

I found a link to the TSB and it looks like its for 2000-2001:

http://maxima.theowensfamily.com/tsb/NTB00-070a.pdf

And this one for rear o2 sensors for 2000-02

My car runs the same as it did with the SES off as it did on.

We have the same p0420/p0430 cat codes also in the '00 Max.

I figured it was most lkely due to having 1 or more bad o2 senors. I hadn't looked into it until now, my girl just got the Max a couple week ago.

I used to get the p0420/p0430 cat codes on my Nissan Titan after i initially installed the Nismo LT's. Since mine is a 2WD it only has 1 set of cats attached to the OEM exhaust manifolds & 1 set of resonators located in the B-pipes. Unlike 4WD Titans that have 2 sets of cats from the factory. 1 set on the manifolds & 1 set in place of the resonators on the B-pipes.

Now since i installed a set of Berk Technologies SS B-Pipes w/ Magnaflow Hi-Flows i haven't seen the codes pop up once.
