How reliable is this reliability test on the max?
I came across this on MSN and of course I had to look up my car. I wasn't surprised to see that the motor had significant problems, i.e. coils and MAF. I was surprised at their estimate to fix these two items. Maybe they got the parts at wholesale or cost? What they did leave off was the 1. all of the shifting problems on the autotragic 2. the easy chip paint 3. Rotors that are way undersized for this size of car 4. Leather that lasts about as long as the new car smell 5. Grab and go HID headlights 6. and most important, Nissans five star "customer service"

-I haven't had coil problems
-I replaced the MAF (even though my first one was OK) for <$100
1. That's why you should get a stick-shift

2. Yeah....
3. Yeah, but Maxima is not the only car with that problem
4. My leather's in good shape (on my '00)
5. I blame that on thiefs, not Nissan. A thief can steal anything he wants if he really wants to. Alot of other cars with HIDs (including Porsches) are frequent targets of HID thiefs.
6. My 2 local dealers have great customer service and have always done good by me....
it's interesting that they say 'significant' problems...these problems are fairly easy to diagnose and fix....other than that, the VQ30 and VQ35 are some of the highest-rated engines out there by automotive magazines...

I know I read all these good reports about the nissan engine as being one of the ten best motors, or some crap like that in motor trend or something. I've had every problem that these carts are known for. Then you add in all of the fighting I had to do with Nissan to get them to repair it under warranty (because it was under warranty) but somehow they could never get it to duplicate the problem until it was out of warranty.
90 bux for a MAF, or like 50 for just the sensor part, coils- 200 bux on Ebay from a guy who crashed his Maxima- mine where still good but I changed them. 5spd tranny here, no issues, paint ? no chips on mine and I got 100K miles- repainted front end with better paint. Leather ? kidding me cloth baby ! No HIDs here... I have not had any mechanical problems with my car that where Nissans fault other than the MAF and possibly coils. I love my car.
don't trust MSN Auto's reliability ratings
I don't trust their reliability ratings at all. Ever since I looked at them years ago, they look really suspect and still do. For instance, it seems very implausible that 95-96 Dodge Neons have better reliability than 95-96 Camrys and that overall the Neons have such good ratings. They have awful reliability ratings in Consumer Reports (which is where I'd look). I've found CR's data for the cars my parents and I have owned to be pretty accurate.
