Well, I get around 21-22mpg in 90% city driving, but that 18-20 looks like highway mileage (per Nissan's news post).

If you buy a 3L and complain about gas milage, then too bad. If you want to save gas buy the 4.

I get 21-22 as well city driving, and that 18-20 they predicted is hwy. It's a truck engine put into the cars, lots of TQ, and will suck on gas...go figure.

Someone pointed it out that this is EPA range, not highway. EPA range is combination of highway and city with reserve. Currently I get 18 combined.

If you are looking for an economy car then just get a 4cyl. What did you expect 28MPG??

Gas mileage...

I have consistently been getting about 25 mpg (rarely 27 mpg) and I do not baby my Max in the least. I do a lot of highway driving though.

By the way...a friend of mine said that he saw something on the news that gas could reach $3 p/g this summer!!!

The current altima is within 2 mpg of the maxima, which surprised the crap out of me. Its a smaller car and smaller engine, it should be a lot higher.

Russ...not to be a jerk....but that figure is NOT for the Hwy. I can pretty much bet on it. If thats hwy...whats city...14-15. Thats BS. The size of the engine isn't the end all answer. Grand Prix with 3.8L get well into the 20's. HECK...even vette's with the 6sp get great hwy mpg due to the gearing. A heavy **** passat with awd still gets 24 hwy.

The 3.5L ISN'T a "truck" engine. Its whatever it needs to be. Obivously they can tune it anyway they would like. It has over 20 more lb-ft of torque in the P funk. BUT its tuned that way. When they team it with the 5sp the torque drops(cuz the 5sp couldn't handle it they say), but the HP rises. Remeber..torque kills gears, NOT hp. Basically its main features are bigger bore/stroke, cvt, dual stage runners and some other junk. If they 3.5 is truck engine then so are all the other post 94 maximas!

Smaller engine yes, with the I4, but the Altima is the same size if not bigger than the Maxima.

But it's lighter. According to the Nissan press release, the Altima will be 70 pounds heavier than the 2001 model. That would put it less than 3100 lbs.
