3.5 in a 2001?will it work?????

i have the ability to get my hands on a wreched 5.5 for almost nothing and after reading that some guy dropped a 55 in a 4th gen i was wondering if its possible to swap a 3.5 into a 2001.. im assuming that the wrecked 5.5 i can get my hands on will have everything i need . will it work ...im sure its a big job but does it require crazy work .... ??? would i need to swap everything....motor , tranny, shifter, ecu, and all wires. can a normal mechanic do this or do i need to bring this to maxxtunning in li to do this???
thanks for the input

Save yourself all the headaches and money by selling your '01 and paying a little more for a 5.5 gen.

I haven't personally done it, but this has been posted many times before & it's the general consensus. Not to mention you get HID's and many more goodies out of the 5.5.

All I can contribute to this is that I love my 02 6 speed and all the stuff that comes with it (HIDs, heated seats, heated steering wheel, auto climate control, etc)

maxS is the person who put the VQ35 from a 5.5gen into a 5gen and then he pulled it and put it into his brother vsamoylov's 4th gen..

Same guy...lots of time and patience and experience on his hands.

Kind of like MOST of these type of projects on here, ie Tilley, SR20DEN, Krismax, Donkey, etc., and I don't blame them.

Others confirmed seeing it...good enough for me.

you can't ask a 4th gen guy to confirm a 3.5L in a 00 Maxima. Some of them think all 5th gens have the 3.5L. I had a guy think my 01 has a 3.5L cause my engine looks diff than his 95 Max. I aint sayn there are dumb 4th gen people out there, but there have been quite a few weird supprises around. Yyosamalov or whatever his nick name is has the weirdest posts ever, sometimes when I read them 10 times I still can't understand what he means- when he was doing his 3.5L to 4th gen swap. I like to see real pictures, or I call it BS.

Oh...I thought you were commenting on the 6spd in a 4th gen.

The VQ35 in a 2000 was confirmed, ie pictures, I saw it myself.

Again, vasmolyi did NOT do the swap his brother maxS did and THAT is why his posts are vague and not descriptive, ie it's hard to explain something you didn't directly do yourself.

2001 SE MAX..... I am Also very interested in this project, have researched it much. On this site you won't find many people who have even done their own air filter. I think it's as possible as the Civic - GS-R swap, same bay new engine

just my opinion/take

I put my own air filter in. After I read the directions about 10 times, I tried it. I messed up the first 3 or 4 times, but on my 5th filter, I got it right.

I also put my own gas in and am learning to buckle my own seatbelt.

This swap would only make financial sense if you do the work yourself. If not, the labor costs will push you past the cost of upgrading to an '02. But from what I gather, almost everything SHOULD be bolt-in. And I suspect you can use the stock 5-speed and axles if you choose. All you need to swap that I can think of, would be the complete engine, ECU, wiring, maybe fuel components, and possibly the gas pedal since the 5.5 is drive by wire. This is assuming all the accessories will bolt up.

Another way of going about this is to swap in only the 3.5's short block, and reusing the 3.0's heads, manifold, etc. This has been done with success on 4th gens, but not yet on 5th gens that I know of. However this will bump compression well above stock, for better or for worse.

same here in mass... grew up in FL and they don't get out of their little BulletProof box to help you lift a finger... her they don't trust ANYONE with gas, like your going to spontaneously combust at the pump.... nor do they let you talk on the phone

Not everything is direct swap over on a 5th gen from a 3.0 to 3.5L. You need to enlarge the firewall for the shifter cables - 3.0 has a rod actuated shifter that goes above the exhaust under the exhaust shields. 3.5L has shifter cables that run through the center console, through the firewall and out to the tranny. The ABS modulator assembly right under the brake booster, it needs a different bracket if you are going to use a 6spd tranny. Also if you are going to use the 6spd tranny you will need to cut off the bracket off the frame rail, and drill holes to mount the new tranny mount bracket to the frame rail. 6spd tranny mount mounts differently to the car vs the 5spd mount. I think using a 3.5L with 5spd would save you alot of time, grief and $$$. I'm looking for a 3.5L shortblock so I can get it rolln. People on the FI forum here **** me off with the amount of time it takes to make me a custom turbo Ypipe. I think Nismo heads with VK45 valves, Custom ground 272 deg cams on 11:1 compression VQ35 block using a 3.5L intake manifold with 1st Gen Q45 TB would rock. 300WHP without a problem.
