What modifications need to be made to 4th Gen Struts to work in a 5th Gen (2000)?

I am a (former) 4th gen owner who JUST dropped cash on Illuminas and AGX for my I30, but 2 weeks later it was totalled. I have the struts that I can pull off of the car, but I need to knwo if they can be reused, or if i should just sell them and buy 5th Gen parts.

What modifications need to be made to 4th Gen Struts to work in a 5th Gen (2000)?

Also, will the 4th gen Springs work? I highly doubt that they will, but i am not certain.

I have heard that the struts can work- they are my main concern...

By the way, search was not working when I posted this. I tried a few searches and got errors every time.

first, let me say sorry about your ride. i was reading your whole thread about it. i wish you the best of luck with it, and hopefully they find you not at fault, and if they do, then get a lawyer because there is no way it was your fault. I am going through the same thing as you right now, some lady ran an intersection and hit me... not fun.

But back on topic, yes, you can use your struts you have now. and no, you can't use your springs. from what i remember, you have to call cattman to have them modded to make them work. it is not much, and the rear shocks practicly the same. i will try and find out more details for you, and get back to you.

oh, and i thought you were going to get a 4th gen so you could swap all your mods over? what happened to that plan?

Well, I decided that to find another 4th gen that was equipped like my I30 was would be next to impossible- AND I have to do it fast, since my rental runs out soon.

To find a 4th gen with a 5mt, leather, sunroof, digital climate control, heated seats, and with the miles I was lookng for would be hard, with my time constraints. To find an I30 like that- with the VLSD and all- would be nearly impossible, especially with good miles.

Anyway, I found a 2000 SE w/ a 5MT with 108000 miles for about $8500. It has no bose (good thing) and no sunroof, climate control, or heated seats (all bad things), but the price is good and it seems like a nice car.

I had JUST set up my I30 to how I wanted it- new clutch, all new seals and bearings, the almost-perfect suspension, and i was "finished" with the car for a while...and then this happens.

My plans fo the 2000, if I get it are to JUST replace the stock shift **** and shift boots for now, then to drop it on Tein H-techs and Tokico Illuminas when I assemble the parts. If i can re-use anything, great, but if not, I will sell the 4th gen parts and buy dedicated 5th gen parts.

The illuminas have about 1000 miles on them, and the teins went on last week. The AGX were on the car before, but were in good shape. I was hoping that at least the toks and teins would transfer over, but I will have no trouble selling them (and my other removable mods). I plan to put the money toward buying 5th gen stuff, if the 4th gewn parts are not a PERFECT fit. I feel better/safer that way.

I use modified Koni yellows on my 5th gen from a 4th Gen. Only difference is in the front mounting bracket on the bottom of the strut. Where the 2 big 19mm bolts go through the steering knuckle. They are further apart and require redrilling, and welding on new backing to them so they are much stronger- exacly what Cattman does to AGXs to make them fit. Sorry to hear about your I30, but welcome to the 5th gen world. Make sure to check the VIAS operation and MAF sensor after purchase, they don't last too long on a 5th gen. VIAS is fixable with JB Weld on cars with lower miles- or ones that didn't see many VIAS switch overs ( IE driven slowly bellow 5K RPMs). MAF is around 100 bux for a whole new assembly. Your Y pipe should transfer over from the 4th gen over to the 5th gen provided both of them are eighter Cali or Federal spec- can't mix match. RSB also transfers over.

I won't have the time or talent to pull the y-pipe, given my circumstances, but I am pulling the RSB- but i will be selling it, not re-using it.

I can put that $ toward springs and struts.

I had planned to mod the parts to make them fit, but at this point, I will likely just sell and buy again.

Hey, I'm interested in that RSB if you do end up getting it off the car. I can pick it up locally too.

Rears will bolt-on, fronts will require welding on a new lower bracket since one of the bolt holes is moved.

You can kind of see here what Cattman does to his(black part):

VS 4th gen

I read that there were problems with the lower perch on the 4th gen rear struts if used with 5th gen springs. Any substance to this report?

Yes, however IIRC, you can run 4th gen struts with 4th gen springs fine in the rear. 90% sure, so double check.
