ECU reprogramming

I got a 2000 with 73000 miles. My SES comes on every once in a while and stays for a few weeks, then it dissappears for a few days and comes back. Its a cycle. I had the code pulled at autozone and i know its a P0420. Everyone says the car is still covered under that 8 Yr/80000 warranty. But what I want to know is who here has had any luck getting the dealer to take care of this issue (reprogram the ECU). The car drives perfectly fine but that light is really annoying.

I had this problem and had my ECU reprogrammed. Just take it to the dealer and they'll take care of it. If they give you any problems, just go to http://maxima.theowensfamily.com/tsb/ and look up NTB00-070a. This is most likely the cause of your SES light. However, if there is an actual error, the dealer should correct that for free also. It is still under the emissions warranty that you mention.

Did you notice a performance difference after the reprogram? Or did the light just go away?

There is no performance difference. The light just goes away. This particular code refers to the catalytic converter doing its job.

There is no difference in how the car runs. Its just the light.

Mine's at the dealer today with the same OBDII code.
Unfortunately it was just re-programmed last week and now I'm getting the same code again. Hope this does not become a weekly occurrence

Per Nissan, if the code comes back after ECU reprograming, install new Cat and 02 sensor. My friend who works at Nissan still- we used to work togheter at Nissan long time ago- tells me that he just does Cat, 02 sensor and ECU preprogram and the car will not come back on him. One way to keep the customer happy is- not have him come back few times for the same repair.

Is the reprogramming free at least?
And if its not how much should I expect to spend?

Thanks

It was free for me, but I'm under 60K so far. Another thing - it's a good idea to print all TSB's etc. BEFORE you go there and have them with you, so in case one of them feels super smart, you can show them what's going on.

any nissan dealer. I didn't even buy my car from a Nissan dealer and they still did it. (Ironically, my car was purchased by the previous owner at the dealership that did the warranty work )

speaking of reprogramming, I just put in a new MAF and when I asked my stealership if they could do the TSB ECM reprogram for it, they said yeah, but $85 to do it. I remember from past threads some people had this done. Is it worth the money???

I took mine in for the same thing yesterday and the guy at the dealer told me he had to order a part and that he would call me when they got it, I dropped it off the night before and left the Service Bulletin on the passenger seat.

Sadly that's a pretty standard charge for one hour of labor.

I have a custom scantool that can get the calibration id. I checked it and it was the same. They even admitted it after I confronted them about it.

Take it back and have them program the ECU, bring in a TSB with you for ECU reprogram for a Maxima of any year. It will outline how much time they get for ECU reprograming. I bet ya its like 5 tenths, which is around 45 bux. There is no real skill involved, you download the old program into the Consult, hook it up to their Nissan interactive web station, compare the old program with the new ones availible- tell them you have the newest MAF in there, and you also have the P0420 program in there. They select the right program for ya- and then download it to the Consult. After that the Consult gets hooked up to the car for like 15 min to upload the new program. Make sure no one touches anything on the car for that time, or ECU can get burned up in the process. Thats really IT, nothing else to it. For anyone in IL, hit me up bout getting a ECU update.

I think ECU updates should be free. It's like upgrades for your computer software. Norton doesn't charge you anything to update virus defs. why should Nissan charge you for updating operating software so the car runs at optimum? :attention

8 trouble codes

I just had my maxima checked because it will not start unless I unplug the MAF then the car won't rev past 2500 RPM. I don't know what to do. I have these 8 codes P0102, P0113, P0123, P0223, P1121, P1122, P1102, and finally P2135. All these codes are what show up when connected to the reader. Anyone know anything that I can do. This is a 2002 Maxima SE with the VQ35 engine. I did have a mugen cold air intake on it, but I took it off this morning so I can take it to get it fixed. You know how mechanics are about add-ons. I need HELP!!!! I also have a 200sx and can reset the ECU by myself, I'm wondering if I can do that to this car?

looks like your maf is gone. i'm suspecting you're under warranty so just take it to the dealer to fix it.
you can reset the codes with an OBD-2 reader, but since something is really wrong (most likely) there's no reason to do it. better get it fixed

P0102 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Low Input
P0113 Intake Air Temperature Circuit High Input
P0123 Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch A Circuit High Input
P0223 Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch B Circuit High Input
P1121 Throttle Position (TP) Sensor Inconsistent With MAF Sensor High Voltage
P1122 Throttle Position (TP) Sensor Inconsistent With MAF Sensor Low Voltage
P1102 Mass Air Flow Sensor Function Heater
P2135 Throttle Position Sensor

You need a MAF and a Throttle body. GAY drive by wire 3.5s.

Thanks

Thank you for the reply. I tryed to get the person to reset the codes, but he wouldn't. Does anybody think that the cold air intake had anything to do with all this?

Also, this car just went out of warranty like 1400 miles ago. Usually how it goes!
