Audio Upgrade for 2002 SE...Considerations, Options

Hi,

My 2002 SE it doesn't have the BOSE system - i think just the basic one.

My retired 1991 Maxima was running the following:

Diamond Motorsports M561 Component (for the front speakers)
Infinity Kappa?? can't remember (for the rear)
2 Image Dynamics IDQ 10 subs
ESX Quantum 604 (4 channel amp) for the speakers
ESX Quantum 752 for the subs.
Clarion Head Unit and a CD Changer

Now, I want to move the speakers, amps and subs into the 2002 SE...is this feasible.

Also, what replacement headunit can i get for the stock 2002 ?

cheers - Noela

sure. you would know if you had bose. the door over the cassette player and the speaker covers would all be labled. it sounds like you have a pretty good setup. whether the clarion is double din (the same radio face plate height as the stock nissan radio you have) or single din (half the height), it can be done, but you will need to go to crutchfield.com and buy a face plate adapter for the new radio. the nissan oem radio is keystone shaped, and the clarion is rectangle, whether single din or double din, so the plastic adapter would fill in the space in your dash... but other than that, the head unit will work. i've installed a lot of head units into cars, but never amps or subs, so you would be better getting advice from someone else about that. hope this helps.
as far as which radio to buy... that depends on how much money you want to spend...

I got a '00 SE w/o BOSE system also. The fronts (M561's) are 6.5's? If so, they should drop in. The tweeter may not fit in the A pillar w/o modifications, because the factory tweeter is pretty small. The rear can also drop a 6.5 in there, so your Infiniti's should work. I'm not sure on the '02 Max's, but my '00 has a lot of room under the seats for you amps if you want. I got an Xtant 4.4 and an Xtant 6.1 under both of my seats, and those are not exactly small amps. As far as the subs, the trunk has ample room to put just about anything in there. I would suggest buying the Bose subwoofer grille, cutting out your rear deck, and porting your subs through the stock grille. That's what I did. As far as head unit's go, personal preference. Luckily our cars have a double-din so just about anything can drop in, or at least be custom fitted. Good luck

Thanks, Dr. and Bran,

I was thinking of looking for the BOSE unit to replace my head unit. But given your comments, i think i will use my single DIN Clarion and probably stick the changer in the glove box -- for 4 yrs, i hated going to the trunk to fill my CDs and will like a convenient spot in the front.

But i like the color of the stock headunit enclosure..is the face plate adapter going to be the same? -- my head unit has a blue LCD screen..

well, i will try and look for a good install shop around Baltimore area...

thanks - Noela

As far as the Clarion unit matching your dash lights...I'm not sure. I got a '00 Max and the blue and red lights on my Kenwood Excelon KDC-X879 match my interior dash lights perfectly. Plus, it has the MASK feature which folds and hides away the face when not in use. Basically, looks like a blank black plate is there. I would look around for a good stereo shop that can custom mount your changer in the center console armrest. Depending on which model Clarion you have, but CD changers now days are small enough to go anywhere, and accessibility is easier in your armrest. That should be your only "custom" work necessary. Everything else will drop in or will need no major work. We're lucky, our cars are stereo friendly, at least compared to some others.
