Something I've never seen on a maxima. . . (big pic)
I was thinking, I've never seen anyone do an integrated intake port on their hood. Not a scoop, but a functional intake port like I've seen on some skylines and a few BMW's. It would definitely be something a little different.
The best picture I could find.

I was reading the article in Automobile Magaazine.... I think is the R34, but who knowa.... Also a new Mitsu Evo is coming in 2007.... It is called the Evo X.... 340 HP and a new M3 with 400hp.... so ....I think I'm going to order my SC and see what happens... But the Skyline, I'm getting one of those... that's for sure....

I would hope it to be twin turbo. The RB series although strong is getting old and outdated and it has very few parts in common with other cars. It is also a pretty heavy engine for its displacement (for a modern nissan engine, not counting domestic, etc.) even though it is able to get a lot of power.
Back on topic, if you really want a hole in your hood that is fine, but for the money to make it look good, assuming it does and it most likely won't, it will not give much if any gain in hp.

if my maxima were a project car, i would do something like that. The ported air box has been shown as a decent method of getting more air into the engine. This would take it a step further and get cooler air. I was just saying I'm surprised that no one has done anything similar.
that looks like the intake on a fighter

Now all the little rich high school kids who drive recklessly in their WRX's and Evo's these days will be able to drive even more recklessly with all the extra horsepower. I can't wait.

For what it's worth,
it's been proven in wind tunnels that the velocity of air close to the hood is kind of low, which makes these 'close to the hood' scoops not very useful. In other words, while you will get air, it won't be under much pressure. As you move further away from the hood (higher), pressure increases, so the more effective scoops are either large or sit high above the hoodline. Also, there is more pressure close to the front lip as opposed to closer to the windshield.
That being said, the first picture looks great.. but won't be very functional. The black 5th gen that looks a tad ugly would probably force down more air, but it still looks like more of a cosmetic mod.

If you're talking about the thing behind the cockpit just above the wing, thats actually the gunport for the F-16's 20mm cannon. Now that would be an interesting mod on a Maxima.
Irish- why isn't the F-16 a real fighter? It's one of the most successful multi-role fighters ever created. I assume its some kind of bias towards the Navy?

Note that the highest pressure is where the lines squeeze together (top of the windshield) while the air closest to the hoodline loses some of its velocity due to hitting the nose of the car.
P.S. ... how do I insert a pic in my posts? Thanks.

BTW the F-16 has been very successful worldwide, but that owes more to it being relatively inexpensive rather than it being superior at air-to-air combat. It's an all-around "good" platform for attack, air-to-air, fire support, etc. The F-14 was the best air-to-air fighter ever built, mostly owing to the Phoenix AAM, one of the longest-range air-to-air missiles ever made with a range of 60-100 miles (only the F-14 carried it)...The F-16 carries only the AAMRAAM, Sparrow, and Sidewinder, all much shorter range. So in terms of a true fighter, only the Russian MiG-25/31 had AAMs that could match the range (the F-14 and MiG25/31 were all built to shoot down supersonic strategic bombers - specifically the B-1 and the Russian Blackjack, which is why they were so fast - Mach 2.5 to Mach 3.1 - and carried long-range missiles). the F-16 could not even catch up to a Blackjack

a little inside knowledge...the F-22 is gonna more or less get canned. It was made to replace the F-14 in strategic intercept and has a very limited anti-ground capability. Only problem is.....there's really nobody to intercept any more....the US has full air superiority with the F-15, 16, and 18 and the F-22 is basically an unneeded luxury stealing $$ away from other more useful military programs. Even the Brits are on the verge of pulling out of the F-22 partnership
"Lockheed Martin landed a $2 billion Pentagon contract to build 22 more F/A-22 Raptor fighter jets for the Air Force, the Department of Defense said Thursday."

i was hoping that the yf-23 would win the contract back in the day so that the Navy would get a new VTOL.
long live "Top Gun"
maybe in a few decades things will be like macross.... lol

Yeah I'm just giving Jason (soonerfan) a hard time...he's a Staff Sgt. in the Air Force and I work for the Navy (and am a Navy brat)...we always go back and forth like this.

or develop maxima parts...
my friend who used to be an MMR at Sima 32nd Base used to make parts for his accord during work lol
I think the hood scoop on that 5th Gen is ugly... I'm sure someone could design something at least as functional but better looking...
Btw, thanks for the air combat tutorial guys.... the org always has its way of breaking the drudgery of a late night studying session...

NACA duct: This is an air opening which was named after the National Advisory Committee for Aerodynamics. It was the American organization which developed the kinds of designs for low drag air ducts for jet engines. NACA ducts are used on cars to force air for engine breathing and cooling, for forcing air through the radiators, and for providing fresh air for the passenger compartment
all GTR-34 V-spec IIs have this NACA duct to aid in cooling the engine and twin turbos.
