Nissan has a security bracket that they will order and install for you for free (at least at REGAL NISSAN in Roswell, GA). Ask your local dealership about it.

I saw them once. They look ugly. Plus if someone wants to still the headlights they going to still it anyway and they'll just going to make more damage.

The max is the 2nd highest vehicle in the nation for insurance claims due to the HID problem. We are all going to suffer from it one way or another in premiums, so I don't blame you man!

I understand that insurance can cover that. But I heard some people had their headlights stolen 5 times. I don’t think that insurance will believe in that or if they will the rate will go up plus with all repainting and fixing, I don’t want to deal with that.

Yeah I notice HID theft is really most pronounced in the NY/NJ area, coincidentally that's also where the biggest Maxima concentration is.

get a wiring diagram. u also will need to put a relay in for high beam. but low beam is simple, 3 wires. ground, low and high beam for the headlights.

yes i do have one for 2k2 maxima but not for 2k-2k1. system is simple. 3 wires for headlight bulbs, 2 wires for corner lights and that is it. you will not be using anything from the hids except the wiring. let me know your email and i send you the diagrams.

thieves are dumb.

they won't know any difference if you swap them. so you waste $$ for a downgrade and get ripped off anyway. either get the Data Dots and Security bracket done or maybe just display the sticker to deter them (if you fear they may not care and rip it up worse to get them).

They are not as dumb as you think.

In New York City, people downgrade to save themselves from more costly repairs, when the theives destroy your fenders and hood along the way. This will lead to the possibility of you getting poor paintwork done and the car will never be the same, now your fenders and hood may be mismatched and to people that are picky, the car will look like it's been in a front end collision, your resale value will be affected.. etc...
having HID headlights in a 02/03 Maxima and living in the NY/NJ metro area is asking for trouble. They can be gone any day. People's headlights get stolen out of their driveways, private parking lots, garages, street. Middle of the day, night, busy avenue, doesn't matter. I heard a lot of stories and know quite a few people who had them jacked. You honestly don't want that.

Theives are not that dumb. i would say about 50-60% of NYC 2002/03 maximas have non-HID headlights installed. The others have had their headlights stolen at least once. I know some people who got hit three times and more. You don't want to make too many claims with your insurance company, nor do you want to keep paying high deductables, risk more damage to your car and be scared to park it anywhere you go. It's not worth it to have brighter headlights.

Datadots and brackets make it harder, but it won't scare the theif from attempting to steal your headlights, it's been done already and they will just try harder, they have nothing to lose. This recall is worthless. Only brings more business to body shops for fender and hood work.

Speaking from a body shop here. We got 2 Max's in this week with HID theft. One is a repeat cust., 2nd time they got him. The other was interesting, he had the recall done by Nissan. Thats the first time I saw what this recall is all about. The bracket they install relocates the ballest which is placed onto a bracket which is bolted to the frame rail just under the headlights. The data dots indicates this is done. The theives yanked the lights out of this car without notice of the data dots. The bracket ripped the lower section of the headlight apart, the ballest remained securely bolted to the car - thus rendering the lights unuseable by the thieves. Once they realized they got lights with this recall installed, they simply left the lights dangling from what wires were left. Another problem we have seen here at the shop is when the thievs rip the horn wires out, sometimes they get the front airbag sensor wire as well. By law we cannot repair the wiring harness of an SRS system. That means the car now needs a complete engine wiring harness at the tune of $1500 bucks plus 8 hrs labor. That brings the repair bill up near 5 grand for the theft.

Quick note - If your SRS light is on after your lights are taken, take a look at the airbag sensor plug up front just under the hood latch. If the wires are ripped from the connector you must get the entire harness replaced, not repaired. Make sure the body shop doesn't simply repair the plug. Some shops might do that to make the job a bit easier. They are actually breaking the law by doing that!
A new harness will yield you a better repair.
Your insurance company will have no issues paying for the harness either. It's a liability issue for them.

IMHO the recall is worthless. Thievs only see the car as having HID's and rip them out very quickly. If you think there going to inspect the lights before stealing them, your crazy. They work fast, but upon seeing that the lights they got are useless, they walk (or run) away leaving everything behind, but the damage is done.
