Is this a rip off or not

Hey people, I'm coming up on 30k miles on my 2k3 and my local dealership wants to charge me $499.00+Tax - $599.99+Tax with Plugs for the following
-Complete Lubrication,
-Repalce Motor Oil,
-Replace Oil Filter,
-Adjust all Fluid level,
-Replace A/T tranny fluid,
-Replace antifreeze and bleed system for air,
-set tire pressure,
-visually inspect tire condition,
-rotate and blalance 2 front tires,
-inspect timing and emission control,
-inspect HC/CO,
-replace air and fuel filter (if applicable),
-inspect emissions carbon cannister,
-inspect suspension,
-inspect exhaust system for leaks, cracks, chafing, abrasion, deterioration etc.,
-inspect axles and u-joints,
-adjust brake and parking brakes,
-inspect pads and linings,
-lubricate all hinges,
-inspect all hoses & belts - adjust if necessary,
-complete safety inspection,
-service throttle body,
-service battery & inspect charging system.

I'm just thinking to myself, that's a lot of moeny just to inspect most of these items. I drive my car mostly in the suburbs so it's a mix of highway and city driving, all comments are appreciated!!!

You can do most of those things.. and remember "Inspect" that means they are going to find something to screw you... so don't..... I mean is your money...but don't waste it...

not worth it IMO. Just do oil change, tranny fluid change, air/oil filters changed, in-cabin microfilter changed and you should be fine. Your plugs are suppose to be 100K plugs and your radiator fluid does not need changing this soon.

Mine's coming up on this soon too....was a lil worried that 1.) it would be that much, and 2.) that it's very important and I absolutley couldn't do it myself, or take it elsewhere.....

good to know

WOW, they really want to charge that?

Most you can do on your own: oil, oil/air/micro filters, Adjust all Fluid level, set tire pressure, visually inspect tire condition, rotate ALL tires.

I may ask them to: Replace A/T tranny fluid, Replace antifreeze and bleed system for air, balance tires. If you thought important.

The rest is unnecessary unless you're having problems. Most of them get checked with state inspections.

you can "inspect" those items listed above if you have a haynes or chilton's manual(found at local bookstores or auto parts stores), and maybe some basic tools.

-complete lubrication (lubrication of what?)
-replace motor oil (which is part of lubrication, if not ALL of lube)
-replace oil filter (normally part of an oil change, no need to differentiate this from the oil change. just another line to make the service look all that much more complicated)
-adjust all fluid levels (what is there to adjust? IF any of your fluids are low, they are just going to top it off. for the price listed above, I think a flush for ALL of the fluids in your car should be replaced with new fluids, i.e. p/s, brake fluid, coolant, etc..)
-tires (set pressure-ok, you cant do that yourself? rotate two front tires and balance - why cant they do all four? also a visual?)
-complete safety inspection (this is just a certified mechanic going off a checklist to make sure the safety features are in ooperating order on your car, headlights, seat belts, etc.)

basically, anything that says inspect, you could do yourself unless it requires looking underneath the car to visually see the drivetrain, suspension. chances are, if you haven't jumped your car, it should be fine.

I know there are other items that I have overlooked or not commented about, but please, PLEASE, don't pay $499-599 for the 30k service. if you are unsure, or just dont want to deal with the service on your own for various reasons, then check out a local mechanic to see if they offer the same services. more than likely they do, and at a fraction of the price.

cliff notes: you are gonna get raped if you get the $499 30k service

All that stuff can be done for $50-$100 in materials and about 3-4 hours in your driveway......none of it is difficult. As stated above, get a Chilton's or Haynes manual from the local auto parts store and it'll tell you how to do all of it.

I can't believe anyone would pay $200 much less $500 for the "dealer service" packages. Some people just have too much money

1.Oil Change
2.AT Transmission Change
3.Air Filter Change
4.In cable filter change
5.New wipers
6.Tires rotated
7.Tire Pressure checked

(what do they mean by lubing the chassis? isnt the chassis lubed already?)

So all i need to do is when i reach 30000 miles??

I am around 27K, Only think you should be paying for is oil, a oil filter, air filter, incabin filter, you can do your tranny flush if you want too.. here's a easy to do you own service.

if it makes noise then then lube it, if it doesnt then its fine.
if doesnt feel right then worry about it.
if it doesnt smell right, then worry about it.
if it doesnt run right, then worry about it.
if it works, drives, stops moves, and feels good. then keep your $$ in your wallet.

cars know when you get money, thats when they start asking for new parts!!!

Ya at most all you really need at 30k is an oil change and transmissions fluid change (not worth the hassle to DYI).

Nissan Tech Here

OK, here it goes. These prices are a joke, I work at buckeye nissan in OHIO and I know what we do to get money from customers and what not. Our hourly rate is $80 including any diag before work begins. This service they quoted you on is based on a 30 or 60k service, which does include all that listed but 50% of the stuff does not get looked at except a real quick glimpse just to see if its ok. It is not worth the money. It takes a tech a max of 2.5 hrs to do the full service and the tech only makes about $15-$18 an hour. So nissan is taking this money all for themselves. You can easily do all this at home like the other guys are saying in the previous posts. Dont screw yourself out of $500 for a free car wash and fluid replacements... Unless you are just lazy and dont have nothing better to do with your money.

Just a heads up.......

Here's the deal. I owned an 89 Maxima for 11 years and never once took it to the dealer for maintainance. I change my own oil/filter, check fluid levels, replace plugs as needed- the end. Things I pay for include brake jobs, transmission service and cooling system service. Tranny and cooling should be done every two years. Other than repairs, the above should cover a newer car. I probably saved $1,500+ over 10 years by NOT going to the dealer for basic maintainance and inspections.

I stopped taking my Max to a dealership after 36K and I do all the regular maintainence by my self -- oil/filter, tranny fluid, filters, coils and plugs, brakes, coolant and the recent change was to regrease the starter motor.

All that one needs to do is sit in this forum and learn!!! and offcourse share your experiences both good/bad.

I called them about that, and they said don't bother. That confirms what my certified mechanic friend says "They know you have a well built car, and if there were problems, you would already know and report them. They will just say they checked everything or give a quick glance." Basically if you do the simple maintenance, you only need these inspections to confirm possible problems.
But if you have $$ to waste, sure, it will look good on your car's history for sale later, or warranty concerns.

Err Mr Nissan Tech, Nissan does not make any $$$ from services that the dealership sells to customers. Tech who makes that 15-18 bux a hour (is really a fool for working for low scale like that) books depending on the dealership- 3-4 hours to do the 30K-60K maintenance. So that only puts the dealership at around 70 bux or so to pay him to do this. Then you gotta figure in oil filter is like 4 bux, oil is around 5 bux, brake fluid is bout 2 bux, tranny fluid is around 20 bux, wipers are 20 bux, in-cabins are 45 bux, air filter is around 15 bux. White lithium grease in the can is probably like 5 bux. Add this all up, and you will have around 150 bux in parts. Now you have around 220 bux in Labor and parts, and the 300 bux goes towards the dealerships profits. I worked for Nissan, I'm a Nissan Master Tech as a matter a fact. **** for 550 bux I will do a clutch and 30K for ya. Seriously its a big rip off. When I worked at Lexus we didn't even charge that much for a 30K service on a LS430, and you got a nice cushy Lexus loaner car for the time your car was in for service !

Yes, it's a huge ripoff. Only suckers pay for these expensive 30k,60k,etc. stealership rear violations.

look, don't be stupid, just open your owner's manual and see what exactly needs to be done at 30K mi. At 30K you don't need to replace your coolant, and replace anything other than engine oil, oil filter, and just check the level of all fluids. The list above is a scam.
